best beach for a day trip from disney?

anotehr vote for the gulf side. We did Clearwater beach for the day in May and it was probably the BEST day of our vacation! The beach was like being in the Caribbean. So pretty. NExt time I want to try the Fort DeSoto beach. BTW- we have 2 kids 5 and 2, and they were able to play in the calm water nicely.

We have visited Cocoa Beach before and did not like it nearly as much.

HTH!

In my business we call this is an irrational fear..It means it not based on the facts, the statistics, but is none the less very real. Try to tell someone with a real phobia about flying to just relax on the airplane!!
So, two things
1. skip the beach, do not do this to yourself as going to the beach is not a necessity of life.
2. Go the beach and keep saying to yourself over and over...
Peter Benchly loves beaches, he just made a movie is all.
I have a 100 times greater chance of being struck by lightening, hit by a bus, or winning the lottery than being bitten by a shark.
If you are also deathly afraid of lightening or being hit by a bus, I would suggest taking Disney Grandma's advice and going to the beach at The Beach Club or Grand Floridian or Poly...

Peace....Ted

You are right! I had a cancer scare this summer and I promised myself that I would do whatever I wanted b/c one never knows what will happen. This is an irrational fear. I WANT to go to the beach.

Hi, good for you Bella...would suggest step by step into the water, be around a lot other folks in the water, and maybe watch for a while before going in...
If you look early in this thread, I talked about Honeymoon Island by Tampa...the beach there is pretty tame and quite small. The walking beach goes for a couple of miles, with no swim access, but the beach/swim area is very nice...good luck...Ted

The Fort DeSoto beach is just wonderful. You can walk and walk and see very few people.

I vote for Clearwater. There's no rip tide and little chance of sharks. The water is usually warmer too. Siesta key in Sarasota is a better beach I think; the sand is incredible, but it's farther away. Both are tight parking. You usually have to pay. Parking is harder at Siesta.
Both have beautiful sunsets

Where on Clearwater Beach do you recommend? I'm looking for a quiet laid back atmosphere, but I will need to rent an umbrella...
