Benefits of booking via Member Services Phone vs Online?

I'm sure if I asked about a welcome home trip now I'd be given a plethora of reasons why my request is laughable. Of course they would preface it with the word "regrettably".

Empty platitudes make all the difference.
I was told if I made any reservations on the new contract or if points were used in anyway on the new contract that I would not get the welcome home booking. He told me to be careful when checking availability and modifying etc since he knew how important the welcome home booking was to me.
