DH and I recently turned 50 and now receive frequent solicitations from AARP. Interested in hearing what the benefits are and is it worth it?

The letters vaguely mention discounts.

I use my AARP membership to get excellent discounts from Alamo car rental. I think it saved us a couple hundred on our last rental in January.

We purchase our house and vehicle insurance through AARP with The Hartford.
So far it has been fine.

Movie discounts, local restuarant discount and local attraction discounts.
I live in the Philly area and my aarp gives discounts at AMC and regal theaters and most of the local attractions.

AARP at 50??!! I turn 50 in a couple of weeks and for the first time in my life an age is bothering me. I thought all the senior citizen discounts started at 55 or 60, never ever thought is was 50.

Are you considered a senior citizen at 50 too?? :scared1:

On the other hand, I love discounts!!! :yay: I'll have to take a look at what all the discounts are. ;)

As the mom of a soon to be 16 year old, I don't feel like a senior but AARP keeps reminding me of my advancing age:thumbsup2 Ummm thanks AARP!

Don't worry, they will track you down!

I tried AARP for a year. Never use any discounts that my AAA didn't already have. I never renewed.

I just signed up DH50 in hopes of getting some good discounts. They have a Universal Orlando buy 2 days park to park get 2 free for the 144 before taxes. Seems like a good deal but we were only planning on going for 2 days so I am not sure if we will use that or UCT. I became an associate member free as a spouse even though I am only 47.

I too want to hear more about this. I have been receiving these offers too.

We changed our motor club from AAA to AARP and it was much cheaper for us. I realize that each AAA office charges are different, but our office is one of the higher ones so it saved us a bundle! Around here they use the same towing company.

We also use it to get 20% off at Dennys. Its only good during certain times of the day, but its a nice discount!

Denny's 20% off meal, up to 10:00 or 9PM, and coffee discount all day.
Rainforest cafe 10% off
Dunkin donuts free donut with L or XL coffee
Eye glasses JC Penny, Sears, Lens crafters, and some doctors. 30% off but my Penny's special for $99 all frames and free lens was less.

I received a discount on the medicare supplemental, I have an insurance policy they offer.

My dh has discount medications

The room discount for AARP on recent hotels was larger then the AAA. Just received something for dental plan I am going to look into. Eye glasses, driver training discounts for car insurance (You can take the course, but there must be a discount fee for memebers)

UPS Shipping,
Michaels has 10% off on Tuesdays,
Duhans sports, 10% off reg price merchandise
You can print a $3 off a $10 Walgreens purchase, show the AARP card

I got a five-year deal that was just a few dollars a year. I have saved many times over on motel room discounts. Sometimes the AARP rate is better than a convention rate when I'm traveling for business.

I resisted AARP for a long time, until I found that the discount at one hotel I stay at when I visit my daughter at school was so much larger than the AAA discount. It covered the mebership fee and still saved me more money than AAA would have.

I agree with a previous poster, we signed up for AARP when my husband turned 50 but only kept it a year or two as we didn't find that the discounts were worth it because we already had (have) AAA. Since we use AAA for other things we just didn't find AARP worth it. Plus I don't agree with a lot of the things that AARP lobbies for to Congress so that was also an issue (for me at least, my husband just didn't want to spend the extra $$ to have both memberships).

I saw some hopper discount and something else for Disney, wondering if its worth it,, hubby turning 50 this week and we just got it in mail

I saved the cost of my 3 year membership in 1 year on hotel discounts alone. I never even think to look at or use other discounts, looks like I need to make a list of them and use them for even more savings.

Just found this post and had to share with DH. He turned 50 this year and is planning on joining AARP. We are big coupon and discount people, so we were hoping it was worth it. The letter just says discounts but doesn't list them. Is there a site that we can visit to see all of the discounts? We are also members of AAA, but would not mind having both memberships.

Interested, DH was against joining due to some of their beliefs too. I signed him up when the hotel discount was going to be what it cost for the year (and that was one night). Looking forward to saving elsewhere!

Thank you for making me look it up :) AARP.org then member benefits (left hand corner under join) then discounts and you can see all the benefits ..........I didn't know that I could get a discount at Reebok outlet stores which is where I am heading today to look for new shoes! So thank you, thank you, now I just hope they have what I want! Now I will make a list of the places I might use the benefits and put it in my wallet:worship::worship:
