Albany law stops sales of certain ice cream dips
Posted: July 10, 2009 09:49 PM EDT

Hold the dip cones at some of your favorite ice cream stands, because an Albany County law has stopped the sale of certain kinds.

Phase two of the County's ban on artificial trans fat went into effect on July 1st, meaning that food products containing over 0.5 grams per serving had to be eliminated at restaurants. This includes fat in mixes, prepared food and food ingredients.

NEWS10 previously reported on some local bakeries that were affected by the ban, but now it means that some kinds of the popular ice cream topping are on the list. The Ice Cream Shop, on Central Avenue in Colonie, is one of the establishments affected.

"If it's a law, I want to be compliant," said owner of the Ice Cream Shop, Antoinette Kranz, "As far as the customers go, they're the ones that are upset."

Kranz posted signs saying that she would have to take dips off the menu following the enacting of the law. Officials said that sprinkles were okay, but the dips had to go.

"All dips are way up there in trans fats," she said, "It's the nature of the beast, if you will. It's the way they make it."

Needless to say, her customers weren't crazy about the idea.

Kranz quoted a common reaction, saying, "'Oh, so now the government's telling me what I can't eat and what I can eat."

She then shrugged, telling NEWS10, "but it's such a small thing."

Kranz says everything else on the menu is still available. Even so, some local ice cream lovers say this goes too far.

Joann Diblasio, of Delmar, said, "It's way overboard. There are so many more unhealthy things in the City of Albany that this is ridiculous."

Kurver Kreme, also in Colonie, told NEWS10 they have been made aware of the trans fat ban, but said that their toppings will stay as they are free of the bad fats.

NEWS10 spoke with numerous Albany County legislators on Friday. Some of them said candidly that they believe that the law might have gone too far in this instance, but as things stand right now, the trans fat ban will stay as is.

That is oh so funny but I'm sorry to hear you're having a tough time.... I hope the moment of mourning is over soon! :goodvibes

Thank you all for your good thoughts... I have retired my ex boyfrield voo doo doll for the time being...

It took at least 3 boxes of chocolate - the cheap crap too... to help this. I still tear up over it from time to time. I realized it is not HIM that I am upset about but me...

I think that everyone goes on to live happily ever after and I'm still stuck in the kitchen feeding lucifer... I can't get the darned slipper on my foot cause of flat feet and the only mice I'm friends with cost me thousands of $$$ every year to visit...

Whogirl's mom... thanks for the offer of the punch... if it doesn't get any better I may take a bath in it...

Oh dear, Michelle! I've had that party a few times myself. :rolleyes1 Thank goodness for booze and valium. ;) But seriously, not to make light of it, sorry to hear you are dealing with that. I totally get it. Very tough news to hear.

I

:laughing:At last check I am not Brenda. Scientists have not yet ruled out some Twilight Zone senario where-in I was osmosis-ed off of her, only to hatch at a later point in time.

Yeah... we haven't quite figured out about the cloning part yet... Dolly??? Anyone see Dolly lately??? I bet she tasted good... :lmao:

Hey, is anybody watching the Travel Channel right now? They are showing a dinner served 180 feet in the air, with the table and 22 participants suspended from a crane! This is in Miami, I think. $500 per person, very nice menu, it looked like. Would that be a Dis-meet or what?? :rotfl2:

You're gonna have to peel me off the floor of that basket or whatever or it's gonna take lots of bubbly and bungee cords to keep me in my seat... :scared1:

My next trip isn't for awhile still, but I've already been planning on where I want to eat. Any opinions?

Breakfasts at; Crystal Palace and Akershus.

Lunches at; Beaches and Cream, Sanaa, Coral Reef, Brown Derby, Tutto Italia, Chefs de France, Yak and Yeti, Le Cellier, and Crystal Palace.

Dinners at; Jiko, Artist Point, Narcoossee's, Flying Fish, Hollywood & Vine, Citricos, Yachtsman Steakhouse, Boma, California Grill, and the new Cat Cora restaurant.

Then either breakfast or lunch on the day I go home at either Kona Cafe or Grand Floridian Cafe.

Thank you ladies for all the kind words. Looks like my mom will be going into surgery this afternoon. I have to head up to the hospital in a bit so I can see her and comfort her before she goes in. She was told it will be an easy procedure and that maybe she can go home tomorrow night or Saturday depending on how she progresses.

One of my favorite Vegas spots is Andres at the Monte Carlo. Excellent food and they always have foie in various incarnations since they are a French restaurant. Impeccable food there and extremely attentive (although possibly over attentive) service. We want for nothing when we dine there.

Many hugs... :grouphug:

to our own TigerKat. Hope you have a WONDERFUL day, Kathy!!

Over on the WB Panama thread it is customary to steal others designs... :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Michelle ... you are the bestest!

I'd say your welcome... but... :rolleyes1

what I want to know is what kind of recourse I have against a dealer that I think has deliberately messed up my car.

I've had this VW passat for six year and never had any trouble with it at all until I started taking it to this new VW dealership. The place I bought my car in 2003 is no longer in the VW business so I can't take it there for service. We've had all the recommended maintenance performed over the years and the car has been a dream until the last nine months when they started frigging with it.

They changed my oil at the end of May and now suddenly I have a part with a hole in it that was leaking oil all over the cooling system. So they "fixed" that and I picked my car up last night and all was right with the world.

Tried to drive to work this morning and the moment I accelerated on the highway the car began to shudder and felt like it was going to die right there on highway 70. I coaxed it ten miles to the dealership praying to the automotive gods that it wouldn't die on me because it was pretty obvious that it wouldn't start again.

So this morning they tell me the spark plugs are worn out and should be replaced every 40M miles. Funny, I responded ... you guys were supposed to have replaced then in December when I had my last tune up at 88M miles.

They didn't have an answer for that.

So I get to work at 10AM this morning and was releived that the car was running smoothly again ... until I tried to get gas this afternoon. It lasted all of two minutes in traffic before it started shaking and shuddering again.

I was furious.

Called Jay and asked him to pick me up when he left work. Called AAA to have the car towed to the dearlership (20+ miles from my office). Called the dealership and b ------ a storm.

I asked them to their faces this afternoon how I could ever have any level of comfort or confidence that my car was going to operate properly after they "fixed" it for the third time in one week and they just looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language.

"we'll take care of it for you, don't worry."

What the hell does that mean? They're going to pour it into concrete like Jimmy Hoffa and bury it under a football goalpost???

At this point I'd just like them to fix it so that it runs long enough for me to get to another dealer and trade it in for a new car, which was not in the budget this year. But neither was paying for upwards of four F&W events.

End automotive rant. :scared:

Ok... I went through something like this a few years ago with Ford...

what you do is contact the North American office for VW... you ask them for the MANAGER for the REGION you are in. The car dealers have to depend on THEM to keep their affiliation and also get cars, etc, in to them. Tell this manager exactly what is going on and get his assistance in this. In other words... it's like the manger is the dealers boss... you're going above their heads...

Good luck and let me know if you want me to send Planky to Toilet Paper their lot on a misty morning... :thumbsup2

& if anyone is looking for discounts for Vegas or broadway, etc... here is a good site I've used... you order through the regular ticket sites but this site gives the current discounts...

Good luck!!!

Pair Stripsteak with Lion King - they're both in Mandalay Bay.

I hear that LK is a good vintage to go with a steak... :rotfl2:

On a lighter note, DH decided to tell me last night that he does not want to stay at DL till midnight and does not want to have to be at the park the next day at 8 a.m. WTH? He wants to get some "sleep" on vacation! :rotfl: I told him he would have a week of sleep into the vacation before hitting Disney and reminded him that the tickets for just 2 days are over $400! :scared1: We decided to compromise and see the 9 p.m. Fantasmic and keep the Minnie breakfast at 8:10 the next morning. Men!

Tell him he can sleep when he's dead..... :scared1:

Allright, getting ready to pack up the computer and go to bed. We plan to hit the road VERY early (4am :scared1:) We'll see if we actually get out of here that early.

OK! I get Trans Fats are not the best thing for me BUT!

#1 I am an adult who should be able to make my own food choices with the right info - as in I know they are not good for me but leave me alone I want it today!

#2 Are there still McDonalds in this area? (I love Mcfries so .. not picking just on the Ronald) Then come on .. we have taken away trans fat sprinkles but I can still get a coke that is 7 times the amount I should have in a day (with real sugar though) and triple fried fries in "good fat"!

#3 ITS ICE CREAM! I didn't show up with Valerie Bertinelli thinking I was shooting a Jenny Craig add!

UGH! Sorry.. just venting on this! I don't get why everyone should tell me what I should or should not eat and drink!

OK- off my soap box and breath! :cloud9:

I'm thinking that they are going to come up with those cardboardy flat styrofoamy things that they pass off as mickey sprinkles... I like them and they're cute, but they taste like paper... (but I'm sure I'm getting my daily requirement of fiber from those kind too... :rolleyes1)

 These lawmakers are out of control. I don't think they have any business telling anyone what they can or can't eat. If I choose to chow down on nothing but trans fats, weight 300lbs and die of a heart attack that's my business and nobody else's. :sad2:

I've been a real slacker this week ... sorry about that.

Anyhoo ... Elin thanks for sharing that pic of you and your hubby - I think you guys look great!

Michelle ... who is gone by now ... have a great, safe, drunken trip!

Planky's Michelle ... that law is a travesty. Lawmakers won't outlaw things like cigarettes which have been proven to kill people, but will outlaw ice cream toppings in an effort to keep us all healthy because we're obviously too stupid to make our own choices.

And as for that woman in the article who was quoted as saying "it's such a small thing..." that's how freedom gets whittled away. It rarely disappears in big chunks ... it's a slow and subtle disintegration. Today you can't have sprinkles tomorrow you can't have foie gras ... oh wait ... that's already happened!!! :scared1::scared1::scared1:
