Being Flown In For a Job Interview -Update Post #13 She Got the Job!

In your experience, how likely is it that you will be offered a job if a company flies you in for an in person interview? Do they screen by phone and then select several candidates to interview in person or do they pretty much deide on the candidate and fly only that person in for a personal interview?

It seems expensive for a company to pay for a flight, hotel and meals for several people but I just don't know anything about this process. Any job I ever applied for was local.

DD24 has had a phone interview with HR, a phone interview with the hiring team, and now will have a personal interview. The job is based in her current town but the corporate office is in a large city several states away.

Just curious for her chances at this new job opportunity...

The last time I was in that situation, 10 people had phone interviews and 3 were flown in. One got the job.

Its no gaurantee, just a sign that they are interested enough to want to meet in person. Its necessary to see if the real candidate lives up to the phone candidate. My experience in hiring has been in person interviews are more relevant and revealing, would never hire without one. The cost of a flight and hotel is minimal compared to the cost of wrong hire.

I'd guess she's at least top 5. Surprised she hasn't had a face to face at the local office since that's where the job is though.

It certainly indicates she's a top choice but not by any means only, no.

I've been flown in, all-day interviews with five different people, lunch with the department - so were two other people I knew well (at different times), and others we didn't.

For a decent-sized corporate interest, it's a standard thing to have to do in the hiring process, so the cost is sort of factored in.

They are interested, but I wouldn't assume anything beyond that.
She could be the top candidate, or she could be a further down the list alternate.

I was flown 2000 miles for my final interview and my daughter was flown 1000 miles for her final interview. My understanding with with both of these interviews is that we both had been selected (different companies) as the top candidates, and that offers would be extended if the interviews went as well as the phone interviews had gone. We both were extended offers and we both accepted. After being with our respective companies we have both found out that they fly in the top candidiates and if they are still unsure or not impressed they then fly out the next candidate in line. Don't know how the company you are talking about works these kind of things but it makes sense to me to only fly people for finals one at a time starting with the people they are most interested in.

Thanks, everyone. My guess is that she's a finalist and it's a case of wanting to make sure she is what she sounds like she is before making a final offer.

Her only experience was to be flown in as a candidate for a job last year and she was the top one and got the offer, but I didn't know if that was always the case - sounds like it's not. Her chances at getting the offer are very good but we'll wait and see.

Every job that a company has paid the expenses for me to travel to an out of town interview I have gotten an offer. So it seems to me that they are serious if they are paying. The 2 times that I paid to travel to an interview I have not gotten an offer.

I've been flown in for job interviews twice. Once was for a summer internship when I was in grad school and I did not get it. The second time was for a regular permanent job and I did get that.

Dh and I have both flown in for interviews. Sometimes we were offered the job and sometimes we weren't. Once I was offered the job at the end of the day-long interview -- before I'd even flow back out. (Unfortunately, the on-site interview showed me that my potential boss was nuttier than a fruitcake and I declined.) At my last job, we also flew in 5 candidates for a job interview -- obviously only one was offered a job.

I did, however, once get an offer to fly in for an interview and found out that the only reason they were doing so was to "prove" to HR that they were complying with affirmative action guidelines and had no intention of hiring me. Needless to say, I declined the offer to waste my time.

She had just gotten a nice promotion in her current job, which she has loved, but the opportunity came with so many great benefits and a huge raise so she is thrilled and has accepted the offer.

I hope it will be everything she hopes it is. I'm so proud of her.
