Being a grown-up refraining from making a joke when your DD13, who begged to be allowed to stay home alone for 3hrs in the evening, gets freaked out because the house is creaking, the wind is howling, and she thinks she hears mice in the walls. Being a grown-up is not only not laughing, it's giving her your warm roast beef sandwich and rubbing her shoulders. (Bless her heart, her eyes were as big as saucers when we got home.)

Finding the fine line between being too protective of your kids and letting them be their own little people. It is so hard to try to keep them safe (emotionally and physically) but still know when to let loose of the cord a little. They grow up so fast....
