I've had a very bad stomach virus/food poisoning that had me down and out for 4 1/2 days. I was running high fever and lost 14 pounds (not complaining about that) but this weekend, I have a 10K to run. I haven't run since last Thursday. Will I be OK? Should I skip the race or go ahead and run? I sure want to run! Any advice?

If you want to run, and are through the worst of the illness (I'm imagining many trips to the bathroom to lose 14 lbs. ), then I would say, Go For It! But... be sure you are well hydrated, with water and electrolytes for the next couple of days. And if you are still having GI issues, then consider that the portalet situation will be what it is and take that into consideration.

As far as the run training, if you have been doing your training up until this illness, that shouldn't be an issue...maybe do a short run Th. or Fri. to loosen up the legs.

I think you will be ok, as long as you are now keeping food down. Stay hydrated. I did a 5k racewalk 2 days after a stomach/virus thing, but wasn't as bad as yours, I only had one night of trips to the bathroom. The day before I had toast, dry cereal, crackers, peanut butter and chicken broth. Hydration is the key. You may want to loosen up a bit with a small runa day or 2 before. I agree that if you have trained up to this point, don't warry about not putting in the time while you were sick. You will do fine!!:)

Thanks, ya'll. I really want to do this run. It's my first 10K and I've trained so hard that I feel like it's a quest cross the finish line!

FOllow what teh others said. Hydration is most important. Missing a week or so will not hurt your muscles. Thye should eb well rested. Trust me, I've been there befor emarathon. Just take it easy. Don't go for a best pace, just go to finish and you will be fine. :wizard:

I think as long as you realize that you may have to slow it down a bit and you follow the great advice you've been given you will cross that finish line.

I look forward to reading your race report. Make sure you continue to get good rest too.

Just wanted to wish you luck! :thumbsup2

I just got over the flu and have my first half this weekend so I can feel your pain!

Hydrate before, during, and after. Not just water but something with electrolites. I like Acclerade because it has a little bit of protein too. (warning: it tastes nasty)

Be very good about eating the next couple days. Don't over eat, but be sure to eat good healthy food. Think fuel not flavor. The amount of pasta required to "carb load" is alot less than most people think. It really is quality not quantity that counts.

Start slow at the race. REALLY slow. You'll be surprised at how fast you are going even when you think you are going really slow. Races do that.

Good Luck! I can't wait to hear how it went so be sure to post on the race reports thread.
