We purchased at BCV because we visit Epcot frequently. If we can't get the dates we want at BCV, we'll try BWV. The recent BWV Bus Transportation thread causes me to wonder...is it possible to rent bicycles for the week and ride them to MGM, Epcot, or between BWV and BCV? Thanks.

First of all the bus transportation is fine from BWV, I have used it extensively many times without a problem.
You can not ride a bike to Epcot or MGM. Bikes are not allowed on the pathways leading to either park. You can ride a bike from BWV to BCV but you can not take the bike into the actual resort area, you can only ride around the walkway/boardwalk areas that connect all the Epcot resorts: Swan, Dolphin, YC, BC, BCV, BWI and BWV.

I am interested in those bikes for fun-ridin'... what is the cost, and what variations are there (I know there are the surrey bikes -- what sizes do those come in and cost for those, what about any other bike sizes, etc.)

My family would get a real kick outta those!

DeeP...thank you for your reply. It was just a thought...we'll likely walk to MGM and Epcot...helps work off the calories from the lunches and dinners we enjoy there :-).

Just a word of warning: those surrey bikes are alot more work than you would think. We rode on a 4 seater last trip and it dang near wore us out going over the bridges. There is a bridge on both sides of the Boardwalk, between the Swan/Dolphin and Boardwalk and the Beach Club and Boardwalk. Be ready for some serious pedaling.

Other than the surrey bikes which are rented on the boardwalk, the Community Hall at BWV has regular bikes available for rent, including children's bikes and adult bikes with baby seats.
Sorry, I do not know the cost of the rentals.

I believe there is a bike and boat plan for $199 for unlimited 5 day use of bikes and boats for one week for a family of five.

Bikes from Community Hall at BWV rent for about $6/hour. There is a small DVC discount. Bike helmets are available; I don't think there is any extra charge for use of a helmet. These are single speed uni-sex styled Mongoose bikes. It's easy riding around the resorts since the terrain is pretty flat.

I asked for a map at the Community Hall and they gave me a jogging map and suggested that I could ride any of the paved jogging routes. I usually follow the path along the canal toward MGM, go up to the Buena Vista Drive at the bridge (there is a paved path), then follow the drive down to Epcot Resorts Blvd and go around the resorts outer perimeter back to the bridge. It's approximately 2.4 miles around. I also ride the inner path on the boardwalk and path around Crescent Lake and the paths on both sides of the canal to MGM. I usually do about 10 miles or so.

the boat and bike plan does not include the surry bikes, sorry. And speaking of the surry bikes if you have young ones and are walking the boardwalk watch out for the bikes they have some crazy drivers in them sometimes.

I might be reading this wrong but if you stay at the epcot resorts there are no busses that run to EPCOT or MGM. You have to walk or take the boat.  I could be wrong so maybe someone could help.

I am surprised you could ride on the pathway to MGM because there is a sign on the pathway behind BWV going to MGM stating no bikes beyond that point. I know my DS was told he could not rollerblade on this pathway and I would think bikes would be more dangerous to people walking and take up a lot more room on the pathway than someone rollerblading.

I've never seen any sign forbiding bikes on the canal side pathway from BW to MGM, other than the surrey bikes. There is a sign that says no surrey bikes beyond this point. There is also a sign that restricts access to the service road (not the path). There is another sign that limits surrey bikes on the last section of the pathway to Epcot.

Consider that the rental bikes are located at the BW Community Hall that is itself located along the canal pathway, just past Luna Park. How do you get a bike to and from Community Hall without using the path along the canal? They don't want you on the service roadway.

I think that the rollerblade prohibitiion is different. I was told that there is a Florida law that forbids rollerblading on public walkways. Actually, the path along the canal is much wider than the typical trails along abandoned railway right of way here in the midwest. These are frequently shared by walkers, joggers, bicyclists, and even equestrians. Proper cycling practice is to give an audible warning as you approach from behind ("passing on your left") and then slow down to make sure the party you are approaching doesn't step into your path. I am continually amazed at the people who turn around to get a good look at you, then step to their right to "get out of your way". Of course, after they've turned themselves around, their right is now your left so they are stepping right into your path.

I just assumed, incorrectly it seems, that the sign meant no bikes and the pathway was only for people walking. DD will be glad to hear this, since she has wanted to bike to MGM and I told her it was not allowed!

Note that you can only bike as far as the parking lot at MGM. Bikes are not permitted past that point, so you cannot ride all the way to the entrance. This makes little difference in a recreational ride, but it does prevent guests from biking to the park for the day. I don't know how someone would secure a rental bike against theft in any case, since they do not come with a lock of any kind.

paults...this will be embarrasing to admit but I should have been more specific in my post. The original bus transportation thread started me thinking about the bus to AK, monorail vs. bus to MK, and walk vs. boat to MGM & Epcot. I knew there was no bus transportation to Epcot and MGM from BWV/BCV and while DH and I were discussing the options to all the parks, the bikes popped into my head. Thanks for pointing out what could have been confusing...I will try to ensure that I am clearer in the future :-).
