I know in the past I had read that it was possible to book the 1 BR even with 5 people in your party. Has anyone done this recently and was it still allowed?

Technically no, unless the fifth is an infant.
When you book give the names of all five and see if it flies, if they don't say anything you're home free. Sometimes they let you, sometimes they don't.

Yes it is still allowed except in the AKV value 1br.
