DH and DS15 talked me into going to this movie. Please tell me it's not like Call of Duty or whatever that game is where you have to kill aliens. I hope there's more to it than that.

I saw it last weekend it might have been a bit too realistic for me.

Yes there are aliens and yes they do have to kill them.

But its actually very realistic, considering the topic.

I really like Aaron Eckhart, he did a great job. My brother is a Marine so it sort of hit home for me and I was very emotional - yes I can be a sap when it comes to things like this, but he has been to Iraq so that is all I thought about when I watched the movie. Excellent specials effects.

Hope you enjoy it with your family... let us know how you like it.:yay:

Going with DS tomorrow.

Is it with the shaky filming? DD is hesitant to go because the previews seem that way.

Its not as bad as Cloverfield was with the shaking camera work, however you do have a little bit of that.

Okay...thanks. She hated Cloverfield because of that. I had a hard time with that one.

My DH, DS and I saw this movie earlier this week. It felt like spending two hours in the middle of a video game.

They filmed some of the scenes in our town. The big scene with the highway exposion/fire was filmed during the day on one of our interstates. All the smoke and fire freaked out a lot of local people here. They thought it was real.

They don't. But I don't think he even thought this was just a fun escapist kind of movie. For one thing, it sounds like regardless of the story (which he obviously didn't really like) he didn't like the way it was shot compared to the way other movies have been shot. If he just didn't like the story but liked the way the movie looked, he probably would have given it some credit.

I have noticed that problem in lots of movies for the past many years, too. The human action scenes that are not computer-generated (e.g. a sword fight between two people) are shot in such close-up that it's hard to tell what is happening or who is doing what, the actors don't need to show even the most basic of action skills, and it just turns into a headache-inducing mess. I guess there is so much time/money spent on the computerized special effects and large-scale special effects (often involving vehicles of some sort) that the filming/editing of scenes where the actors are responsible for portraying the physical action is often neglected and done in the laziest manner possible.

DS saw this last weekend and said it was one of the best movies he's ever seen. He's 12.

Just saw it with DH & DS13. I am generally not a big fan of action and war movies but I really, really liked this one. They do kill aliens and there is some of the shaky filming. The beginning of the movie gives a little of the back story of the characters and then it's all action.

Give it a chance, you might be surprised. This is one that's much better to see on the big screen as opposed to waiting for the video.

I totally agree. We just got back. I didn't even have time to read any posts before we had to leave. There was no story, just all killing aliens. It wasn't horrible, but you couldn't pay me to sit through it again.

Just got back. While this will not win any Academy Awards, I liked it. It was VERY cliche', from the "plot" and acting standpoints. But I thought it was shot extremely well. On par with Blackhawk Down and The Hurt Locker. It had a very gritty "real" feel to it, and for me, the effects were not unbelievable or in your face. It could have been a war film with ANYONE as the bad guy, not necessarily aliens.

I like District 9 a bit more for the characters, acting, plot, but Battle LA was pretty good...maybe a rental.

We just got back from seeing the movie. I thought it was fun! It's rare that both DH and I like that type of movie because most of them have such horrible violence, which I don't like at all. I loved that this one was low on the gore.

Just a good fun movie-night movie - just for entertainment's sake!
