Basement Frustration...

Hi everyone. The previous owner of my house was a real do-it-yourself'er. To the EXTREME. This person refinished the basement by himself. Wellll...... we are going to be looking to move within, oh, the next year or so. I know that we're going to have to do some repairs that are just not holding up. One of which is our basement celing. It's one of those drop celings with the tiles, and it's so poorly done that it's going to have to be replaced. Luckily, the room is pretty small- only about 18' by 20'? Just a rough estimate. Is this going to BREAK THE BANK to have it replaced??

I have no idea on cost but if the tiles are cut evenly mostly the same size see if you can reuse the tiles. A drop ceiling is definitely a do it yourself deal. If you can use a tape measure and a pair of tin snips you can do it yourself. Watch a video off utube or take a class at homedepot or lowes...

I would think $ wise this won't be bad, especially if it is just that they aren't level. Frustration wise though I would bet pretty high! My husband and I did this to our basement and I can't imagine having to undo it to get it level. It was VERY important that the crossbars were level and all other things super straight!!

Though your instinct may be to put up Sheetrock and get rid of the tile ask yourself if they were being cheap or practical. Are there any pipes you may want to have access to or electrical. Though its a basement sometimes when people refinish they forget its a basement. I have a finished basement the main room is a sheet rocked and plastered/painted. but in two rooms there is Armstrong wood panes because we could remove them to get to pipes if we needed to.

We just bought ceiling tile at Lowes last weekend to finish our basement. The prices we looked at ranged from about .53/cents square ft to 2.80 per sq. ft. Ultimately, we purchased Armstrong Homestyle Oasis 2 ft x 2 ft panels that cost $1.11 per square foot. We need to cover between 450-500 sq ft. The cost for the panels without the grid system was $570 plus tax. Hope this helps.

Did this do-it-yourselfer get building permits? You may have trouble selling if they aren't on file. Happened to a friend of mine.
