I know that to be able to go from park to park you must have a Park Hopper ticket, but if you have only a base ticket, would you be able to leave and re-enter the same park? TIA?

Yes. You may receive a stamp or something before you leave or it may be part of the scanning system - just check at the gate on your way in/out.
Entry is for the entire day - there is no time limit or limit on the number of entries that day.

We always buy base tix only, and usually leave the park and return later in the day. You won't need a hand stamp; scanner does it all.

I seem to recall getting a stamp (Ultraviolet stamp) ... but that was 10 or 15 years ago ;)

I have a question - my cousin is going in October and is wondering... she bought the base tickets for the advance discount and wondered can she upgrade to park hoppers at the gate if they decide they do want to hop? She doesn't think they will as they are only there 4 days but was wondering...

Yes, you can purchase the hopper option but only once at Disney. Just go to any guest service counter at the parks and they will be able to assist you. It is a flat fee of $45 plus tax now. Even if she used two days and then decided to add the hopper option, it would still be $45 + tax per ticket
