Does anyone know if banks (Wachovia in particular) are open on the 5th? I wasn't sure if they are closed on Monday because of the 4th falling on a Sunday.

The majority of banks are going to be closed. The ones that tend to be open on holidays and have extended hours may be open.

It's a banking holiday but many of the branches here will be open but the transactions will not post until Tue.

Our Wachovia branch is closed on Monday.

It's the July 5th holiday, duh! :)

Seriously, when did July 5th become a holiday??? I never understood places closing because it's the day AFTER a holiday.

Some places that are normally closed on Sunday (like banks), close the following day because their employees would normally get the holiday off w/ pay. When it falls on a Sunday, they are already off, so closing the following day is how they get their paid holiday off.

I think its a Federal thing...If holiday falls on a Sunday, the the off day is the next business day. It its a Saturday, then I think they get Friday instead..

My question, when did Black Friday become a holiday...It amazes me how many places are getting holiday pay on Day after Thanksgiving, but not Christmas Eve..lol:confused3

Most places of business guarantee their employees a minimum of at least six holidays:

New Years
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Thanksgiving
Labor Day
Christmas

If any of these days were to fall on a weekend, the employee would be entitled to a compensatory day. In this case, July 4th fell on a Sunday therefore employees are entitled to Monday off. If it fell on a Saturday, employees would be entitled to Friday off.

Actually, the day after Thanksgiving is optional. I've worked at places where it was considered part of the Thanksgiving holiday and we had it off and I've worked places where it was considered a regular day so we had to come in. There is no firm rule about the day after Thanksgiving.
