Bankruptcy and America Airlines?? Will our tickets be good?

After buying my tickets from America Airlines at a great rate today, my husband told me about the AA bankruptcy thing.

If they go bankrupt, do you think they will still stay in business, and continue to make good on their sold tickets, or does this mean it's over, I lose my $, and I have to buy airfare again?? (not really possible)

BTW- Our trip is in Oct.

The US Congress recently passed a law requiring all other airlines to honor tickets on a bankrupt airline. The other airlines can only charge you $25 to change the ticket.

On a side note, AA will probably go into Chapter 11 and just continue on like USAirways did. This will allow them to invalidate thier high cost contracts.

Agreeing with CarolA here.

I would not worry if I were you. Airlines can operate under Chapter 11 Bankruptcy for a long time. Usairways did and has now come out of it. So did Continental. United is currently operating under Chapter 11. Even if the worst of it did happen and the airline was to close down, another airline would pick up American's routing and would surely honor your tickets. I think you can rest easy!

I have been wondering the same thing, we fly American June/July. We got a great rate too.

Another AA flier here - I purposely DID NOT book United because of them being in chapter 11. We're flying in July - so we should be OK (I hope!)

I'm flying in December - hope they're still good by then - but it's nice to know that another line will pick up their routes
