Banking rented points

Here's a brain twister - well, for me anyway.

If I "rent" points from someone can I bank them?
For example, someone has points available at OKW for rent they just posted. If I bought them, could they be transferred to my account and be banked so I could extend a trip with my own points in 2004?

TIA,
Sheryl

I'm not sure of the full answer. I know the first thing would be to determine whether the points you are buying/renting are current year points. This would also require the person to do a transfer to you, not just rent you a reservation. I'm pretty sure the points would retain their Use Year so you'd need to follow those banking deadlines and end of the next Use Year.

Yes you can bank them IF they are transferred to your account, not if they remain in the account of the other owner. If they are not transferred, you may be able to negotiate usage options if you can't use them when you planned.

Thanks Dean and PamOKW.

Sounds like a complicated, but worthwhile process to add some points for a 1x longer trip instead of purchasing more.

A couple of fine points:

1. Banked or borrowed points cannot be transferred. So be sure the person you're getting the points from doesn't bank them first because if they do then they can't be transferred. You must transfer them within their allocated use year first, then you can bank them.

2. You state you're going to use them along with your own points. Remember you cannot have more than 300% of your annual point allocation in any one year.

Example: You own 150 points, bank 150 year 2003 points into 2004 and borrow 150 year 2005 points into 2004 to have 450 points in 2004 to use. This then is 300% of your annual allocation. If you rented additional points, they could not go into 2004 as that would then exceed your 300% maximum

I doubt the 300% is a hard total in this situation but it must be asked of DVC as I suspect none of us have asked this question. I doubt DVC would count the transferred points in your 300% total, I'd bet it'd be in addition to the 300%. Still anyone interested in this sutation should find out for certain.

If someone does ask and find out the DVC answer, please post. I'm sure many of us would be interested. TIA!

I do own at another timeshare that works on points where you can only aggregate 200% of your points by banking and/or borrowing and they are hard line on this.

Thanks again everyone. However I highly doubt I'll EVER have more than 300% of my annual point allocation in any one year.

Being the quiet one;) I have e-mailed MS with this question (as well as a link if they wanted to see it) and will post the answer as soon as I get it

It's listed in your 2002-2003 Member Guidebook on page 26 under banking & borrowing conditions.

Since you can only bank 1-year ahead, and borrow 1-year, and use 1-year of current points, I don't see how it's possible to ever exceed 300% unless you have transferred points.

We'll see what kind of answer InstImpres gets from MS.

Caskbill, I'm confused. Above I interpreted your statements as you could not have more than 300% of your yearly points regardless of how you got them and in this post that you can have 300% plus the transferred points. My bet is the latter is the answer.

I just heard back from MS. The answer is YES, you can exceed 300% of your points. Obviously, it has to be done with transfers from other members.

It was also confirmed transfered points may be banked (but be cautious on use year and home resort).

Anthony, who is a "floor manager" called me to review this. He said it is actually getting more common with people booking cruises. (I smell add-ons coming:p ) He did confirm with a second floor manager (who's name he did not want to give me for some reason). He said they are all aware of this being acceptable but if anyone has a problem, ask for him specifically.

If I wasn't clear, please feel free to e-mail me or post further questions.

Sandy
