Banking question

I called today to book my home resort for Dec. 2009. I have an August use year. They booked me and asked if I wanted 2008 UY points banked to cover that res, and did I want the rest of my 2008 points banked. I said I did not really understand what he was talking about and was that what I needed to do. I was under the impression that if I made a ressie before my banking deadline, the points would be applied even if the stay was after the deadline. Do you need to bank points when reserving?

The points being used for your Dec 2009 vacation have to be in your 2009 use year (so August 2009 - July 2010 for you).

Since you haven't used your 2008 points yet (August 2008 - July 2009 reservations) -- you need to bank them into your 2009 use year to use them for that December 2009 vacation.

It's the date of the trip itself that determines what points are being used, not the date when you make your reservation.

Your 2008 points may be used for stay from August 1, 2008 - July 31, 2009. If you want use those points for dates after July 31, 2009 you would need to bank them. By banking those points, they may be used for reservations from August 1, 2009 thru July 31, 2010. If you have no plans for a stay prior to August 1 of this year, banking them is the wise thing to do since you then extend their usefullness another year.

MS wil not automatically bank points - you MUST request that. They will also give you a banking number to ttrack those points.

Okay, another question.
I did have him bank the points for that reservation. I did not get a banking confirmation number--is that needed?
I am guessing that when my 11 month window opens for the stay using the rest of that UY's points, I will bank and book them at that time.

YOu are a bit confused about banking, booking and borrowing.

Booking can ALWAYS be done starting 11 months from check in date of the trip. The points used for that reservation will be taken from any banked points from the previous use year or current use year, or borrowed from the following use year. The dates the vacation occurs determins the use year for points of that stay...NOT the date the reservation is made.

For example:
With a March use year, your 3/09 points are available for vacations that occur anytime between 3/1/09 and 2/28/10. If you have points left in your 3/08 use year, you would have needed to bank those to use for a trip that occurs between those dates if they have not already been used. Sounds like you need to download Caskbill's program.

If August use year:

1. Points issued Aug 08 must be used for a trip that occurrs between 8/1/08 and 7/31/09 unless you bank. You have until March 31, 2009 to bank any or all of those points in the Aug 08 use year and you can bank without making reservation at the same time. If you do not bank any remaining points in that use year by 3/31/09, you cannot do so at all after 3/31/09, e.g., you cannot call in April 09 and use them for a trip in February 2010 because you will be prohibited from banking them. You must commit the positive act of banking to get points banked; MS does not bank points automatically just because you are reserving a trip in a future use year.

2. Assume you have Aug 08 points and call today to make reservation for December 09. The only way you can use those Aug 08 points for that trip is to bank them first (on same call as making reservation or earlier) into the Aug 09 use year. Date you call to reserve does not determine points used for a trip. Dates you will be at WDW determines that. For that Dec 09 trip if you were calling today, you could use Aug 08 points if and only if you bank them. You can use Aug 09 points which will be "current" use year points for a Dec 09 trip, and you could borrow, if needed, points from your Aug 2010 year.

Thanks for asking B&A. I just nearly had a heart attack when I thought that I should have banked my Dec 2008 pts already & had lost them all. I think I understand now.

Wow there sure is a learning curve to this DVC thing.
