Banking points with II

I heard some story about banking DVC points with II for two years. Can anyone tell me the details?

I purchased a great resale contract with points from 2000 banked to 2001 and all of the 2001 points in tact. I had the owner bank the 2001 points to 2002 before I purchased but had to do something with the 2000 points. They expired at the end of September 2001. I depositied a week in September at VB into the II inventory through Disney. I have until September 2003 to use the points.

Now for the bad news. With four Kids we are trapped by school vacation weeks. Nothing we are happy with comes up in availability. Right now we have a search going for April 2003 and a couple of things have come up, but nothing we like. I will be writing to this board soon to ask for suggestions on how to unload my II week. I know that my Disney documents say I can't rent it or receive compensation but I will be looking for suggestions.

We are also spoiled by DVC. They are the best. If I had to do it over again, I probably would have rented the points for a really low amount and run to WDW with a few extra bucks in my pocket to pay for some extras.

Good luck.

This is one of the two ways of doing an exchange with II. IMO, it's only usefule in 2 situations. You can extend the life of points that will otherwise expire. You can also guarantee a certain type/cost of deposit such as HH studio for 55 points.

Dean,

Reading your posts taught me what to look for and helped me to get the great contract in the first place. Now not to take away from the original poster's question, but do I have any alternatives that I can look at with the II week on deposit?

Thanks,

HBC

Obviously it's too early to give up on April, 2003. What are you looking for in terms of specific resorts and did you only give them the one week as an option. You should consider giving II as many choices as possible and then maybe add some summer options. For April, consider HH Marriott's, Williamsburg, Key West (more difficult), FL beaches, CO mountains, CA desert as places that you might have some real chances of getting in to. Give me more info and maybe I can add some additional help.

I don't understand this statement from Dean response:

Dean, can you explain or anyone?

Thanks,

I'll try. DVC has 2 exchange methods, deposit first and request first. Request first is the most utilized and best for most situations. Deposit first has at least 2 benefits. First, you can deposit a unit with II using points that would have otherwise expired effectively extending the life of those points. Second, you can guarantee a certain type of depoist and therefore the cost. DVC basically works with II using 2 seasons as the base, Adventure and Choice. The II-DVC contract determines how what the DVC member gives up. To get HI, one may be looking at Dream season points (or higher). To get MX or Caribbean in the summer, one may be looking at Adventure. OKW is cheapest during all of the year except for Adventure when it's HH. It's not difficult to get from DVC which season a specific location and time of year measures up to. An example might help.

Say one needs only an exchange for 2 people and wants to go to Aruba for summer, say July. The exchange costs for that time should be adventure. One needs a studio for 2 but prefers a 1 BR unit. Also assume your Home resort is BW (anything except HH). The cheapest exchange to get you into that unit would be HH Adventure studio at 55 points, next closest is OKW at 80. But you're looking for July so it's very possible that the exchange will come in for a match in the winter, too late to book HH for that year and too far out to book it for the next year adventure season. Alternatives would be booking OKW at 80 points, 25 more than HH.

However, if one plans ahead and realizes that this is what they want they can change the tables. Maybe deposit a HH studio for a Jan week the year they want to go at 55 points. Then then ask for resorts like Playa Linda, Costa Linda, Marriott, La Cabana and the like on Aruba. All have studios but mostly more 1 BR units. If you get a studio, you're set, if you get a 1 BR, even better. With an ongoing search, one may get a larger unit than requested. Further info would include that Marriott studios have no kitchen so you could require a kitchen as part of the search criteria. La Cabana studios have a full kitchen (well almost but the same as the 1 BR) and has twice as many 1 BR units as studios. One might say that Costa Linda isn't on the DVC list and I'd say not yet. CL is a sister resort to Playa Linda and is going dual affiliation much like PL and I'm sure it'll end up on the DVC list. I know I'd certainly trade my La Cabana 1 BR summer units for less than the 1 BR points for DVC, just try me, LOL.

I hope this gives you a better feel.

Dean,
Thanks. You cleared up many points for me. Thanks for taking so much time for your reply. The DVC resorts must be full of many friendly people if this board is any indication. Now if I can just talk my better-half into taking the plunge....
