Just when I thought I had it down...I come up with this question. By the way, my 1st contract is heading to Disney today for ROFR (wish me luck). I have my eye on my 2nd contract that will give us 260 points at BLT with the same FEB use year.

So here is my question...I will use my real example instead of trying to make up a hypothetical:

The contracts I am purchasing / bidding on will yield the following points:

Feb 1, 2014 -- 187 of 260
Feb 1, 2015 -- 260 of 260
Feb 1, 2016 -- 260 of 260

We are planning a big family trip in Sep-2015 that will cost us 702 points. To secure that trip, I will need to bank the 187 pts from 2014 and borrow 255 from 2016. That gives me my 702 points to use in 2015.

When I call to make my reservation at the 11-month window (Oct-2014) will the borrowed points be borrowed as soon as I make my rez? If that is the case, what if I change my mind and need less points (1 less room, move to a different cheaper resort, etc.). A very possible scenario (depending what is available at the 7-month mark at other resorts) is that I will only need 630 points. If I have already borrowed 255 points, can I change my rez and only borrow 183 points? If not, am I forced to find a way to use those already borrowed 72 pts (255 - 183 = 72)? Is my only option to bank 72 current year use-year points and use my 2015 pts before the 2014 pts?

I think I know what the answer is going to be, but I am hoping that you do not have to physically borrow the points until closer to the actual rez.

Ugh. I wish there was a practice DVC booking sight so I could run these scenarios instead of bothering all you fine people. LoL.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the points actually get borrowed at the time you made your first reservation. If you modify the reservation and downsize, and the left over points are borrowed, you will NEED to be used by the END of your 2015 UY or they're forfeited.

However, that's NOT your only option. Since you are using current, bank and borrowed. They will essentially return to you the CURRENT 2015 points which you can then bank to next year. No points wasted. Those points can then be used thru the END of your 2016 UY.

Banking and Borrowing are FINAL transactions.

Borrowed points are always borrowed and cannot be returned.

...but when you rebook into a "cheaper" room, they should 1st use all your banked points, then your borrowed points and last, use your normal 2015 points. You can then bank your left over 2015 points into 2016.

Occasionally MS will do something different, and then you will need a supervisor correct your points to policy.

Thanks. That was what I was afraid of. We are only planning on going every other year most years, so getting those current use year points back if we downsize do not really help me much even if you can bank them.

I guess the mantra of book your home resort at 11-months and then try for other resorts at 7-months doesn't really work if you are borrowing to reserve @ 11-months, downsizing @ 7-months, and not planning your next trip until 2-years later.

:(

I haven't even bought yet and I'm disenchanted. There has got to be away to do this so it doesn't put my points at risk. I am still working on a solution. :)
