Banked points and reservations

I feel like I *should* know the answer to this, but I don’t. 😅 Here is the scenario:

• I have banked points and my UY is March.
• I made Reservation 1 for September of this year back in October, enough to use most of my banked points.
• I made Reservation 2 for May of this year in February.
• I am thinking about canceling or significantly shortening my September trip.

My question is, are my banked points “attached” to Reservation 1, since I made that reservation first, like they would be if I had borrowed points to make that reservation? In other words, if I cancel Reservation 1, would I then need to re-book my May trip in order to use up the banked points? Or, is it that once points are banked, they are lumped in with the current use year points, and it’s just a matter of using that number of (banked) points on any reservation(s) before the end of my UY?

Thanks in advance!

If the banked points are in the Sep trip, then, after cancellation, you can modify the May trip online to use the banked points first (and thereby extract current use year points). Note, that if you just shorten the Sep trip via a modification online, then the banked points will still be used first for the new Sep time and current use year points will be extracted before any banked points are extracted.

Referring to the May trip?

That would apply to a modification (rather than cancellation) of any reservation, and thus would apply to the Sep trip if you simply shorten it rather than cancel it. In other words, if you just modify the Sep trip to a shorter time, banked points will remain in it until all regular use year points are extracted. To extract the banked points before extracting any regular use year points, you would need to cancel the reservation. However, you could possibly call MS to do the modification of the Sep trip to a shorter time and take out banked rather than regular use year points first.

If you were to shorten the September trip, banked points would still be used first to satisfy that reservation before any current UY points would be applied. So if your goal is to reallocate those points so that all of the banked points are used for the May reservation, you would need to cancel all of September's reservation first.

You could then "modify" the May reservation, adding any contracts used for September if they are not the same, and don't change anything. The banked points will be applied first before any current UY allocated points. It may not appear that way as you go thru the process, but that's the way it works out in the final step.

Once points are used in a trip they are indeed attached to that trip.

They system will always use to more restrictive points first so as you modify September it will free up the current UY points first before banked.

Now, if you have banked and borrowed points in a trip, borrowed will be used before banked.

Best way to get all into May is to cancel September, free up banked points, allocate to May by modification. And then rebook September.

So, I read this as your September trip is only using banked points. If that is the case, modifying it would free up some of the banked points. Then, you could modify the May trip to use those points.
