Bank of America: $60 per year just to use their debit card.

Heard on CNBC yesterday that BOA was abandoning the $5 charge. Seems no other banks were going along with it and was was suicide. Maybe the sitins around the country are making a differance.

I don't think it is the sit ins, I think it is the massive amounts of people pulling their money out! Local credit union accounts have gone up 30% and BofA already had people leaving in masses.

My DD switched from BOA to our credit union, which we had been asking her to do for over a year. BOA's fees are insane and greedy.

I heard a bit on the news this morning that some activists are urging consumers to observe "Switch Banks Saturday" this weekend, closing/opening accounts. That worries me - instability of any kind is scary in this economy. The traders are so jittery that it could cause yet another market drop.

Still, I don't blame people for wanting to change banks, especially with BOA.

Just goes to show you that you CAN make a difference. Never be afraid to let your voices be heard. The masses speak volumes.

Don't forget that those still with BoA complained too. I think that all of this had a cumulative effect.

At this point, we'll be staying.

Us too. BOA wasn't the only bank that was going to charge, and it's not the only bank taking it back. We're still banking without fees at BOA, so switching was going to cost us time and money. We're sticking with what's most convenient for us.

MY FI and I are staying too. We were going to stay even when they were going to charge and had figured out how to avoid the fee :) We switched to BoA from local banks because we wanted a bank that was literally everywhere and we wanted them to be accessible in more ways.

They were going to charge customers the $5/month if they used their debit card for purchases. If you only used the card to withdraw funds at an ATM, it would be free still. To get around this we would just take out money from the ATM weekly and use the "Envelope" system to budget it. All of our bills are paid online so this looked like a good way to help us budget better.

We were going to switch from BOA and we are still switching our savings somewhere else. I got a notice yesterday in the mail that notify me of the new fee. I liked BOA because we are military and it is nice not to have to change banks every time we move but I refuse to pay for something I can get for free so I guess it is going to be Wells fargo for us.
