I am making a chocolate cream pie that calls for 3/4 cup of cholesterol free egg product. I assume they mean egg beaters.

Anywey, you mix in the egg product with the butter, sugar and melted chocolate etc. but then the whole thing goes in the pie crust then into the fridge to set. So, the egg product is not getting cooked. Does that sound right? I get kind of skeeved out at eating raw egg whites.

As far as I know, egg beaters are pasteurized. Does it say that on the container? If so, they are safe to use without cooking.

Aha! Yes it does say pasteurized on the container. Also, I guess it would cook it a bit when it's mixed with the melted chocolate.

Thanks!

That is why they are telling you to use the Egg Beaters!

Its pastuerized so that it has a long shelf life. Egg whites are perfectly safe to eat uncooked. Have you ever had meringue?

ETA sorry I was thinking of "Just Whites" not egg beaters.

Yes, Egg Beaters are safe to eat raw. I always use them in receipes calling for raw eggs, because I'm very paranoid about eating raw eggs after I took care of a patient with samonella who was hospitalized for 6 weeks. I *never* want to be that sick!!
