Hi all!! My name is Mindy, and I'm 34 yrs old. I've been happily married to my high school sweetheart, Shawn, for 16 yrs. we have 3 boys. Shawn Michael is 15, and such a great help! Then we have identical twin boys, Bailey and Bradley. They are 12, and both have autism. They are non verbal and not potty trained. I'll tell u a bit about us, and how Bailey was granted a wish trip!
Bailey and Bradley were born at 32 wks. Bailey weighed in at 3 lbs 15 oz and Bradley at 3 lbs 13 oz. They only spent two and a half wks in the NICU, they had a few set backs along the way, but were healthy for the most part. At 3 yrs old they were both diagnosed with Autism. In Oct. 2010 we got one of the worse calls a parent can receive. While at school Bailey had collapsed on the track, was unconscious, and they were rushing him to Children's. Thank God my husband and I made it b4 the squad left, and I stayed by his side. After more than 2 hrs Bailey started going into a full on gramal seizure. They were able to finally stop the seizure, but the meds stopped his breathing. He was ventilated through the evening, but off by midnight. He was eventually diagnosed with epilepsy, hypoxemia, and status elepticus. In general the meds keep te seizures under control (he has a seizure about every 3 mos. Generally they are focal, but he loses oxygen fast, and we end up having to call the squad.
On to how we got to this point. We have a wonderful provided, Brandon, who was once a wish child and visited GKTW. He made a referral to The Special Wish Foundation, and they were quick to follow up. Not long after we were informed that VFW was sponsoring Baileys trip! The VFW put on a Poker run on Aug 10 for Bailey!! We had a blast!! Then the other shoe fell. While out on the Poker Run, Bradley (never had a seizure b4), had a bad seizure. We had to call the squad. He was released though, with orders to follow up w/ Neuro. My brother in law, Charlie, had came up for the Poker Run (he lives 2 hrs away). We got to spend the whole day w/ him! He was soooo excited for us! VFW beat there record that night by far! The next day Charlie was hit head on and killed on his way home. Him and his fiancé were on his motorcycle and an SUV came across 3 lanes and hit them head on. Cathy is making a slow recovery, so plz pray for her. She told me that Charlie had a blast, and nothin could have stopped him from coming. We are still grieving, and we plan to dedicate this trip to him. We are having shirts made for him.
On to the good part, we have been approved to go to Give Kids The World Sept. 29- Oct. 5!!!' We have our plane confirmation!! Woohoo!! Also, our wonderful Wish organizers was able to get my mom and Brandon approved to come to!! We are thrilled to not only have their help, but to be able to share this experience w/ them!!! Thank u all for reading, sorry about the book
