Quick question for a friend who leaves tomorrow. Can you take backpacks or purses on rides at Universal?

Not all rides allow bags. Rides that do not allow bags require you to put the bag in a free locker, which is free for the duration of your ride. (Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Hulk, Dragon's Challenge, Men in Black, Revenge of the Mummy, and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit all require the use of the lockers)

I haven't been yet, but from what I've been reading it seems you can leave fanny packs on for all the rides.

Does universal require that you use the lockers? I know that at Seaworld (I think) they have a small basket for placing your belongings in (such as flip flops or hats, etc.) right next to the loading/disembarking area. I saw some people leaving bags up against the wall in the disembarking area as well. Does Universal allow this?

The reason Universal does not allow you to leave your belongings at the boarding area is most of the attractions that require lockers load and unload at different places so it's not possible to retrieve your belongings. I don't know what attraction you saw this happening on at SeaWorld but I think their policy is the same as Universal's. I'm not sure what was going on that day.

You can't get into the line to ride the ride with anything that is not allowed on the ride. They direct you to use a locker. Plus, you disembark at another location than what you load from on nearly all the rides.

I think that both Kraken and Manta load and disembark in the same area.....or at least one of them does. Basically you get in on one side of the row at the beginning of the ride and get out on the other side of the row to disembark while other people are coming in behind you getting on the ride. Next to each row there is a small post with a basket on top for your small belongings.

Thank you for the information on the Universal rides....good to know. Since the lockers have to be used, I may try to do without a bag. We are staying onsite so perhaps this is do-able.

Lockers are required on some attractions for several reasons. The main reason is safety. With a loose articles on board, it is possible for it to become loose and fall, hitting someone on the ground or somewhere on the ride. For the indoor rides where it "wouldn't matter", the bags could fall onto the ride track causing a vehicle to run over it, causing major damage to the vehicle and possibly turn that into a very dangerous accident.

Another reason is liability. If a guest makes it to the ride with a bag, and the team members let them leave it on the platform, that bag could be taken by another guest, or the guest themselves could be looking for a lawsuit and purposely claim that the team members took money from their bags in order to sue against Universal to get more money.

Some rides to enter and exit in different areas (Forbidden Journey, Dragons, Men in Black, Mummy) so that's another reason as well. They don't want people running up and down the platform getting their things back, it also slows dispatches.
