baggage allowance

We are flying tomorrow to Sanford using Thomas Cook Airlines.

The baggage allowance is 20Kg per person (we are currently averaging 18Kg per person), and a 5Kg per person cabin luggage allowance.

The main problem which we didn't consider when buying suitcases is that the suitcase can take a quarter of the allowance before you start.

We expected to bring back some items, but given the very restrictive weights we will not be able to bring anything back.

Very disappointing.

How have others dealt with the weight restriction.

See if you can upgrade to double baggage allowance. Most charters offer the service for around £15 pp. Also, read your small print, as the last time we used a charter to the US, the 20kg INCLUDED your 5kg hand baggage...that was My Travel.

If you really cant upgrade your baggage then I would ditch one of your heavy cases for a ultra large strong canvas holdall. You can get more in these than most cases, and are ideal for bringing home heavy stuff like trainers.

The charters DO tend to be very strict, not so much outbound, but coming back. If you are unlucky, then you are looking at £12 per kg excess baggage. Not a nice bill to get at the end of a great holiday. I would defintately try to upgrade, as you can then relax and bring back more bargains!!

Edited to Add: Are you sure you cant cut down what you have packed already!! You only really need shorts and Tees! Anything else can be bought far cheaper in the US anyway!! I always pack far, far too much, including a couple of pairs of jeans that I NEVER wear (its too hot). Be ruthless...go on, you know you can!!

Who do you do the upgrade with, the travel agent, airline or can you do it when checking in? £15 per person sounds like a brilliant deal. I've also just seen a Samsonite portable suitcase, that I'm considering taking with me. It's wallet size case that can fit in your hand luggage. But will hold upto 20kg when opened up.
