Bad Storm - Tornado damage

Last night we had a really bad storm come thru and they say they can't confirm a tornado touchdown, but if the damage to our storage place is any proof, there had to have been a tornado. We got a call for the storage company and something - tornado - took off the roof of the building that our unit was in and pulled the door out of the track.

The door is not sitting on top of the 4 shelving units in the middle of our storage unit. We can't even get into the shed to see exactly what was damaged. All our Christmas decorations are in there, plus all the monorail toy accessories that we purchased (over $1000 of accessories). We have pieces that can't be purchased any more. Plus we are in the process of remodeling my DD's room and so alot of her things were in tubs in the shed. :sad1:

I cried when my DH told me and then brought the pictures of the shed. I can't even begin to think about what else (I know my high school yearbooks were in there) was out in the shed. Until they get the door out of the unit, we can't do anything.

To top it all off, it is supposed to rain again tonight. I haven't told my DD about it yet because she flew out of town last night. If she calls to talk to me, I will probably tell her what happened. I am so upset right now about it that all I want to do is cry. Having to wait to get in the shed, is also extremely hard. I wish we could get in there to see, but that's not possible.

I'm so sorry, but glad everyone is ok.

Down bursts, like tornadoes, can also do damage. We had one hit our house several years ago, knocked over electric poles, turned over my LARGE cement table outside. It threw my grill into the pool and downed some trees.

I'm sorry :grouphug: I hope that you haven't lost any of your items... if it's going to rain, get out there with tarps & such to secure everything before it gets wet (obviously....) Good luck, I hope it's not too bad...

Here is a picture that my DH took of the storage shed. He is standing in front looking at the unit.

I'm sorry about your loss. If you want to know whether it was a tornado or straight line winds that caused the damage you might try contacting the National Weather Service.

My daughter and I were in a tornado in early April (a tornado blew the roof off the hotel room we were staying in). We had no warning because the tornado was on the ground for only 30 seconds and never showed up on the radar screen. We woke up to total chaos-glass and ceiling debris flying everywhere. Later, when we were allowed to return to our room, I could not believe how much damage was done to our room. We escaped with minor injuries-God was truly watching over us that night. At first the local news stations reported that the damage was due to straight line winds. However, the National Weather Service later confirmed it was a tornado.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss and I am thankful that you were not hurt.

DH talked to the owners of the storage company. They are getting the roof back on today. But it could be up to two weeks for them to get the doors back on. They are going to see if there is anyway to get this done faster. They didn't say anything about if the doors are still inside the units or not.

We drove past there Wednesday evening and they had put tarps over the roof area and plastic over the door area of our unit and one other unit. So when it rained Wednesday night we should not have had any more water damage. DH didn't go back to the unit to check it.

I told DD about what happened and she was afraid of what damage was done to her things from her room. I told her as soon as I found out more, I would let her know.

Thank you for all your thoughts & prayers. I am still upset over what happened, but am also thankful that it didn't hit closer to our house. The Storage place is about 1 mile from our house. Last year they lost the roof off of what they call their big barn during Hurricane Dennis. We had water spouts and a tornado with that. I am just saying a prayer that we didn't lose too much.

Won't they let you move your belongings to another unit that was not damaged? Hopefully, insurance will kick in and cover any losses you have. I hope you are lucky and have minimal damage. :)
