While I was away in Disney last week, my mother was rushed to the hospital because she thought she was having a heart attack. She did not have one, but she had lost 70lbs without dieting and her Dr.'s were concerned. Well after many tests they found several cycts in her Gallbladder and they more than likely will have to come out AND they found a pollup on her esphogus and they did a biopsy and well it came back with not good news.

She had a HYPO thyroid, it was removed back in 2002, now it turned to HYPER which is one reason why the weight is just coming off. But the Biopsy came back that the pollup is pre cancerous and they have to aggressively treat it or else it could be fatal.

My mother is very upset and what I don't understand is if its PRE Cancer why is it fatal if not treated immediately. I am really confused and reading things on Web MD just makes me more confused.

I came back from a wonderful vacation to this. I just feel helpless and don't know what to do for my mother.

My step-father was just diagnosed with Esophogeal Caner last week. WHy do they want to remove the pollup since its onlyprecancrous? I'll tell you. The 5 year survival rate for those diagnosed with esophogeal cancer is like 18%. Many die within the first year of the diagnosis. Usually its not caught until it is "too late", as in my dad's case. Get the darned pollup removed and be thankful that it was caugh in the precancerous stage and that she will be around next year.

WVjules...thank you and Mystery Machine for your kind thoughts.

I am happy that they found it and it is pre cancerous don't get me wrong its just very scarey when the Dr.'s were like we have to do this now, but then in the same breath say Don't worry everything will be fine. It's a bit like spinning in a circle. If that makes any sense.

My mother has been through so much this past year. My brother was in Iraq for 7 months and he just came home a month ago, that took alot out of her.

Now instead of celebrating she is worrying if she will make it to next year. I have been trying to be upbeat and positive but its really hard.

I just hope we can get all of this done and quickly and get everything out that needs to get out.

I'll keep your mom in my thoughts and prayers.. How scary for all of you..

 to you & your family. My grandpa (73) went to the hospital with a stomachache last week. He's always been extremely healthy. They diagnosed it as a tumor. Then, yesterday, the doctors told us that it is pancreatic cancer and that he only has about 6 months. Part of me wants to cancel our trip & stay with him. The other part of me reminds me that we don't really know how much time any of us have. It seems pointless for all of us to stop living and just sit around and stare at him. I figure that having all of us around all the time will actually wear him out b/c he'd probably rather be alone some. I don't really know though.

I definitely feel for you though. Best of wishes to you & your mom.

Thank you for your thoughts and I am so very sorry to hear of your grandpa. to you as well. My uncle had it and it is a tough one. I know how you feel its sort of like what do you do. Live your life or drop everything. I wish the best for him and hope for the best.

My MIL suddenly passed away in 2006 while DH and I were on our 2nd day of an 8 day trip in Disney World. While I would not wish this on anyone (duh), and I had an absolutely horrible time--we actually stayed (more on that later)--it was absolutely the best place DH could have been. Yes he missed his sister and dad, but seeing all the families and be distanced from all of the emotion and decisions back home really helped him cope.

MIL was in the hospital when we left, but we all thought it was just a minor thing (she had some major heath issues, but we thought it was all under control). She made DH and I promise that we would enjoy the trip and stay no matter what...she seemed (in hindsight) to know something more serious was going on. Dh and I had considered canceling the trip for all of 5 seconds...we just didn't think it was serious...although after we promised, I had serious misgivings...I knew there was something about the way she said it.

Okay, sorry enough of that...I just wanted to say that I hope everything turns out really well and your mom is heathly again very quickly!! It sounds like they caught it early enough...maybe you can even bring her on your next trip!
