Bad news on the DIS Meets videos

I've given this a lot of thought and it looks like the DIS Meets 2004 video will be the last one that I do, if I can finish it at all. There's been a few things that have led me to this decision.

The DIS Meets 2003 video was shown at Towncrier's Memorial Day picnic. In all the posts I've read about the meet, I only saw a brief picture of the video. I didn't hear anyone mention that they saw it or even liked it. It bothered me a bit, but in the end, I got over it because I don't need my ego stroked like that.

I'm starting to get some paying video editing gigs and I have to start dropping some things because I'm running out of time. I would have made time for the DIS Meets video, but I think the last thing I will mention really changed my mind.

The final decision not to continue with the DIS Meets video project is that it has been extraordinarily difficult to obtain video and pictures from people. I have to ask the same people again and again to send me video or pictures and I still haven't gotten them. I made a promise to myself that if I didn't see any videos or pictures in my mailbox by today that I would decide not to continue with the project. All I found were bills and junk mail in my mailbox today. Chasing people around like this and begging people for material has really sucked the fun out of doing the project. I'll probably end up pulling photos off the board, but downloading hi-res photos from the DIS on a dialup connection is quite painful, believe me.

I hate to not continue with this project. I thought that people would be dying to get their photos and video into the project based on the response that I've gotten. I guess I was mistaken.

I do want to thank everyone who has supported my video projects in the past. I very much appreciate all your assistance, contributions, and support. I wish things didn't have to end like this.

So we will no longer see critters on my head, Ghostbusters shaking their money makers, or people tasting Beverly.

I would like to say that I did enjoy my role in making the DIS meets 2003 vid. Good luck with your future gigs, Barry. :)

Although, I have never gone to a DisMeet and missed meeting you by minutes at the Universal meet, I want to thank you for all you do.

My husband does video editing and also video tapes many events. He just finished a wedding video for a friend. (For free, I might add.) He also used to do the end of school videos for the cheerleaders, swim team, etc.

He started out doing the D.A.R.E. video for my elem.school and before he knew it, he was doing over 20 D.A.R.E. videos for schools, some of which weren't even in our county. I saw all the headaches and grief he got over the numerous videos. People would wait until the night before to submit the pictures and video clips. He would spend all night editing and sorting through videos and scanning the still pictures. All he would ask is that the person would have the video fast-forwarded to the spot they wanted. They couldn't even do that and would turn in the video completely rewound with a note saying "Please include the part where little Suzie is hugging the coach."

He put in hours and hours of work and all without pay. He has never charged one cent for his videos. He transfers them onto DVD's for everyone who wants a copy, once again using his own money. He has gotten a few 'Thanks" but more often complaints, because "You didn't include the footage of little Johnny." Nevermind that little Johnny's parents never bothered to turn in any pictures.

I have come to the conclusion that no one appreciates free stuff. If you were charging $ for the tapes and also charging for the hours of work, people might appreciate it more.

My advice is to tape what you want and if anyone wants copies, charge some big bucks for it. But maybe I've just gotten jaded in my old age.

My family really enjoyed the 2003 DIS Meets video. Since Flyfly does video editing too, we know all the time and effort that goes into creating a video. Again, thanks; and good luck with your new gigs!

Barry,
Being the camera hog that I am, I only wish I were in any of the DIS meet videos!:p I can't even imagine how you must spread yourself so thin with all the projects you try to complete for others & still do the "real" life thing! Thank you for going that extra mile for others. I never was able to unzip your coaster review (darnit anyway) being the computer illiterate that I am, and I have to tell you I tried time & time again! Your extraordinary efforts have not gone unnoticed.:D
