Bad dinner party but good friends?

We just got back from a dinner party with 3 other couples. These are friends that we've had for more than 10yrs. Well, we had a terrible time! I don't know what went wrong. There were awkward silences, little laughter and oh ya, did I mention awkwardness? I just don't get it. It's not like we don't know these couples very well. We've had wonderful times together in the past. It was painful. Dh and I left feeling really down. Have any of you ever had a surprising night like this with good friends? It was like we all had nothing to say. I'm wondering if we should just switch to doing things together rather than talking. This makes me a little sad though as I used to really enjoy the conversations. Please tell me I'm not the only one to have such weird evenings with good friends???

Sounds like an off night. Unless it happens frequently I'd chalk it up to a one-time thing and not think about it again. I'm sure next time will be more fun.

You know, something like that happened to my dh and I not too long ago. We've got some friends that we are very close to and we always have a good time with but we went out to dinner and it was like you described yours, kind of quiet and awkward. But we ended up getting together with this couple a week or so later and it was great, we were all laughing and having a good time.

I agree... it was probably an off night. I've had that happen before with people I've known for ages.

Thats what I was thinking too. Possibly there was a little tension floating around?
