We first visited Fort Wilderness in 1990. I was 15 then and it was our 3rd time to "the world" but only our first time on property. We had driven our travel trailer from Texas for a 3 week "extravaganza!" I think we ended up going back early though. I was 15 and my brother was 12, and well you can only imagine how well we got along...

Well now that I'm "grown up" I'm not as into camping as my parents were. Call me spoiled, if I pay that much for a vacation I want housekeeping lol. I don't so much mind the idea of camping, but I'm more of a "go along for the ride" kind of gal I guess lol. I'll keep you company by the fire and roast your smores, but hopefully you know how to set everything up and take it down! Oh what's that? You want me to turn that handle over and over till the hitch pops out? Isn't there a button you can push to do that? Yes despite my parents best efforts, I'm a city girl! But I do like that feeling when you're camping, being outside, the smell of the trees, grilling, and the one thing I remember is... there aren't any nicer people in this world than campers!

Anyways, DH and I decided to bring DD3 to WDW this summer and my parents are coming along. The cabins are the perfect thing for a city girl like myself... camping, with mousekeeping! And it's all already set up for you! What could be better?? Oh wait I'm on the camping forum, don't answer that!

We will be going the week of August 24th, I can't wait to experience it all again and see if things were how I remember. It looks like there won't be too many people there the week we are, but we'll be circling the loops in our golf cart just the same :) Nice to meet you all!!

I think you will love the cabins and enjoy the stay at the Fort. We are looking forward to our second trip this coming new year and love the quality that the Fort has to offer.

Jim

Welcome!!!! You'll love the Fort!!!

We have one person on this forum (who will remain un-named - but if you stick around a lot- look for a screen name with initials "BDR" :goodvibes ) - I digress - sorry.

He & his family stayed in a cabin Dec 07 cause his DW was also a "city girl". The whole family LOVED it. They came back this past Memorial Day for another vacation in (get this) A TENT (with a/c I might add). DW??? She loved it!!!

So... there is hope for you! Some people just need to take little baby steps!!

Welcome to the Camping Board!

Trip reports are welcomed, too!

I'm so excited for you! I think you made a great choice;) . Maybe you could get lucky and get one of those in the 100 loop! I look forward to hearing more

The character breakfast you're referring to....was that with a charater named Melvin the Moose???? Does this picture stir up any memory?

If so...color yourself very fortunate. Only a handfull of folks around here remember that show....I wish I could have seen it...but I discovered the Fort WAAAAY too late for that!!!

Welcome to our dark little corner, I hope ya stick around for a bit....you seem to have the right personality to understand the severe psychosis this group suffers.

WELCOME. We also first discovered The Fort by way of the cabins, after 3 stays we bought a camper of our own.

When I first started thinkin about getting a cabin...I really couldnt find many photos of the insides of them....there are several reports here on the disboards that now have photos of them. Here's pics from our stay in Dec07...
Here what the cabins look like in the morning when you cram 6ppl and an infant into one....

Notice the homemade mickey-ears hanging from the bunk...

Of coarse, me and my pillow no longer even on the bed, but the brown pillow gets its own spot!!!

Can you find the hidden mickey???

Official equipment for conducting "Weird Science" experiments...

100_2090.jpg

Ummm...I have no idea what the purpose of this pic is...
100_2091.jpg

Brand new shower curtains, no mildew at all, then I took a shower and it was all downhill from there...
100_2092.jpg

Thats right, not one, but TWO boxes of TAMPAX...oye vey
100_2093.jpg

I bet the guy in the next cabin didn't need 2 boxes of tampons in their bathroom
100_2094.jpg

This is reality folks...this is what your cabin looks like before mousekeeping, don't even TRY to deny it!!!
100_2095.jpg

Apparently there aint no home cooked breakfast for BigDaddyRog THIS morning!!
100_2096.jpg

Playpen compliments of Disney...empty. Everything in its place, as usual.
100_2097.jpg

Just wanted to make SURE I wasnt gettin fed this mornin....
100_2098.jpg

Yeah, I COULD be eating breakfast right here, I chose NOT TO!
100_2099.jpg

LOOK, 22 Inches of cleanliness!!!
100_2100.jpg

This is why the playpen's empty. Oh yeah, he's bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and ready for the parks!!!
100_2101.jpg

Oh great, NOW they fix coffee....and we should have been at the park 15 minutes ago....
100_2102.jpg

She's making progress...she stumbled from the bed to the sofa...
100_2103.jpg

Yeah, good idea...5 year olds and coffee....no wonder her eyes are SATANIC RED and BULDGING out of her head!!!

Ft Wilderness Cabins at their finest!!! Glad Im not a mousekeeper!!!:scared:

If the search engine feels like working for you(we dont have the best search engine on these boards by any means....its always kind of hit or miss) you can search for more photos, possibly of someones cabin whose aint such a mess.

I hope you have a lot of fun! We love the Hoop-de-doo! Make sure you catch Trails End for some morning fuel! Mickey waffles are the best :)

Thanks for the nice welcome and the pictures, I'm sure that's how our cabin will look after a day or two as well! As for the breakfast, I don't remember too much about it. I'll have to ask my mom about the moose.

I think it's cool that Rog's wife got into camping. I would definitely go camping if my husband loved it and knew how to set everything up, however DH has never gone camping.... ever! I got him into a cabin a few years ago, but it ended up being infested with wasps and he wasn't impressed lol. My family on the other hand, the started camping in tents when I was a kid, and then I think we had 4 different RV's. But DH was not so lucky, they didn't travel a lot. Guess we're going to have to change that :) Maybe we'll have to hook up with Rog and he can teach him a few things :rotfl:

Hope everyone's having a good weekend!

:rotfl2: Rog can definitely teach you a thing or two...not certain it will be related to camping though.

City girls covert to great camping girls. ;) Welcome to the boards!

LOL..yeah, she's right...You probably dont want your husband to learn much of what Im qualified to teach!!!

Can't wait to hear how your trip goes - be sure to report back!

Wow! I forgot about Melvin the Moose . . . and I can go back even further than that when we traveled around FW in a steam train! Wish they had never take that away.

We'll be at the Fort during that time as well...but in our camper. I can't wait! We stayed at the cabins in 2005 and we really loved it. The decor was different then though. There were 6 of us and we had plenty of space...DH and I, two little boys, and one baby in the bedroom and 1 MIL who snored like a chainsaw in the living area. Worked perfectly! Here are some pics from our stay...we also had that "lived in" look!

And one from the campfire...the little boy down right is not mine, but the rest are! What I love about this picture is my DH is sporting a pair of "first haircut" Mickey ears in infant size! :rotfl2:

lol I knew you were a trouble maker! :rotfl:

That picture with the mouse ears by the fire is too cute. I have a question though, is it terribly uncomfortable to sit around the campfire in AUGUST? lol I figure if it's anything like Texas, the temperature doesn't drop too much at night lol. I just imagine myself out there sweating my butt off with a melted marshmallow at the end of my stick :scared:

That's a good point! This will be our first trip to FL in August and I'm thinking we won't need a campfire to make S'mores! Actually since I've only been in Feb and May I'm a little worried about the heat of August. I know we will really be spending a lot of time enjoying the Fort rather than storming the parks!

Well, you're not allowed to make your own campfires at your site...but they DO have 2 firepits at the Chip and Dale nightly singalong & movie to burn your marshmallows at while watching the Disney movie they play on the giant exterior screen everynight. Yeah, I imagine its pretty dang warm in August....but its a Disney heat!!!Not quite as nice as a dry heat, but things are just NEVER as bad at Disney as they are at home!!

I'll bet there wasn't any DISNEY MAGIC for you on that trip!!!!!!!!!!

:) I bravely fought my way through those MALE HATING hormones and found a way to enjoy the trip anyway....BEER!!
