Back observation deck at California Grill?

After many trips to wdw, we finally ate at CG last year. We were seated about 10 min. before wishes and our server asked the host to show us to his viewing area. The host lead us out to the back observation deck, it was just us and a another family of 4. We could see all the people in front of use at the reg. observation deck that was extremely crowded, but we really enjoyed not being crammed in. I was just wondering is the second observation deck just for overflow or do you have to be "invited"? Do you have be escorted out or is it open to everyone? We are dining there on are next vacation and would prefer to view from there again.

We've dined there many times and have only been out on the second deck once. We were on Platinum Plan and we were the only 2 out on that deck.

We've been out there I think twice. Both times we were regular patrons and they just had it open.

Hmmmm...we have been to CG 4x and never knew about this deck. Now I want to see it. I would keep this on the "down-low" or it's not going to be so secluded for your next trip.

I assume this deck is the one that serves the Napa Room? If so, it's nice to learn that it's sometimes open to the general restaurant when the room is not booked for a private function.

Our CG server has always told us "feel free to sue either deck" so we often go the back deck b/c less crowded.

While I felt awkward cutting back there, DH was invited to take the kids out there during sunset while we waited for our table. We had a good view of the show from our table so we just stayed seated for wishes. While a totally different deck, we also made our way through a small server station to get out on the other back deck to watch part of Illuminations.
