Hi Everyone, returned home on Friday after 17 nights in Saratoga Springs, seen a few High's and Low's from people that have just got back so I thought I would add my own to join in the fun :)

Always start with the Low's
Bad start - DW took ill about 3-4 days before the holiday and only got worse as we headed to Manchester the night before the flight and worse still on the flight itself. We have since found out since returning and her seeing the GP that it looks like she has had a chest infection. Ended up landing at MCO and having to go straight to the clinic in the airport where she received some anti-biotics for her sore throat but she still had a cough and shortness of breath, so 4 days later we went back to the clinic (they offer free repeat visits) where she also received and inhaler and some cough medicine. Laid her out for the first 4-5 days and the holiday planner went out the window :sad2: but with a wheelchair and some perserverance we started hitting the parks :).

Wheelchair access in the parks - as a follow on to the above and this being the first time I've had to use a wheelchair in disney it was a nightmare getting around the parks, rides and shops, especially when the resort wheelchairs are quite wide and the doorframes are just slightly wider. I have a new found respect for wheelchair users over there.

Jiko - With this being a 2 credit meal I expected a bit more to be honest, food was good but not great like the California Grill.

Flights - This will appear in both sections as you'll see below in a bit but both flights were a bit too bumpy for my liking (which admitedly I have a very low tolerance for so other people on the plane were probably fine :))

American Drivers - Haven driven over there for a good few years now I've seen most things over there, but for some reason this year there seemed to be more nutters than the acceptable average to the point where one driver had picked the wrong lane to join the I4 from the crossroads/buena vista junction and just swerved right in front of us, we were lucky the lane next to us was empty or else there would have definitely been an accident.

Dollar - Having used Dollar for many years (mainly for Dollar Express) but having no problems with them they caught us out at the pickup desk. They tried the same trick last year where we had booked the premium car (Chrysler 300) but tried to pass the full-sized off onto us (Dodge Charger), however this year with the DW being ill and just needing to get to a bed I drove off in a Ford Escape rather than the Jeep Grand Cherokee we had booked (and I was really looking forward to drive) as they were "out of jeeps and this was the equivalent". Any other trip and I wouldn't have left but was so flustered because Lucy was so ill and barely able to stand that I just took the keys and drove off. Only on returning have I realised that there is a £115 difference between the two so a mail has been sent off to their customer services.

High's

Flights - Virgin have no control over the turbulence so I don't hold that against them :), however everything else they have control over was superb. Flights were on time/early both ways, new planes are in really good shape and the new inflight entertainment is superb (although the people in economy flying back may have disagreed as there was an announcement that there was a problem with the sound which they fixed 20 or 30 mins later). Even managed to get our original 2 seats at the back of the premium economy back after they had been lost when Virgin stopped people booking the back row.

Saratoga Springs - Although most of the Disney hotels have better theming and better ameneties in their main building (which I wish Saratoga would fix as the food and shopping choices are well below average when compared to other resorts), I just love the location and the fact that after a night out visiting one of the other hotels for a meal you can just get on the downtown disney bus and walk from the bus stop (we stayed in Congress Park)

Wild Africa Trek - with Lucy's illness and missing a few days to begin with at the start of the holiday we had more money than had planned due to lack of spending so we blew a big chunk of this on the tour and it was worth every penny. The tour was fun and not to strenuous for Lucy and the animal encounters were spectacular

California Grill - We made a point of going last year and loved it so much we booked again for this year and the meal was hands down the best of the holiday if not one of the best I've ever had. Add on the wishes fireworks at the end and it really does finish off the holiday well (this was our last night)

Disney Dining Plan - Only cause this is something offered as a freebie, you can't ask for more value for money than that really :). Nearly every Disney restaurant and even quick service really does have exceptional food and service.

Weather - Only one or two nights did we actually have a rain producing storm pass overhead all other days were clear

St Augustine/Mt Dora - Decided to have a little road trip to blow off the cobwebs once Lucy was mobile and visited these two places. Mt Dora is a nice place to drop by and get a bite to eat and visit a few shops. St Augustine is a fantastic place to visit and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to go a bit further afield

The holiday overall was so nice and relaxing in general (minus the odd hiccup)

so sorry Lucy was ill the beginning of the trip....i hope she's feeling completely better now!!

sounds like a fun trip!!

just one point - not bad american drivers - you experienced bad florida drivers...
the drivers in florida are notorious....much worse than the rest of the country!!!

I hope your DW is better now and enjoyed it anyway :goodvibes

Interesting with Dollar - they tried that with us last year but our car seat didn't fit so they switched it for us.

We had another car seat issue this year and whilst trying to sort it out with the guys that deliver the cars one kept insisting the Ford Escape was the same category as the Grand Cherokee.

I would like to see what they say to your complaint.

Next year we are going to try Alamo from the Car Care Centre at Disney so we can have a drink on the plane!

Thanks for posting about your holiday - sounds like you had a great trip (apart from the illness).

We too always enjoy CG and it is our favourite place to go for a special treat.

What a shame about Dollar - they tried to tell us they didn't have a Jeep one time, but when we insisted it turned out to be at the other terminal and they didn't want to bring it over :sad2: Hopefully you will get something back from them.

Welcome home, I would also recommend St Augustine, we had a great day up there in Feb.

Just shows how we all have different experiences with restaurants, Cali Grill is one of the few places we won't return to, one of the worst meals we have had in Disney, we are really struggling to justify 2 credits on a Signature meal, Yachtsman was good the 1st visit last year but this year no better than any 1 credit restaurant. We are considering Narcossees next year, if thats not good that will be the last Signature. Hoop Dee Doo is teh only meal we are more than happy using 2 credits for.

Next year we are going to try Alamo from the Car Care Centre at Disney so we can have a drink on the plane!
No idea about the Car Care centre but Alamo Tampa airport are not good, they tried charging me $40/day in Feb to get me to upgrade to a Chevy Tahoe, I had booked a 7 seater SUV so was expecting something like a Tahoe. I declined after a lot of hard sell. I got out to the garage to find a Tahoe, I was getting it anyways, he just wanted to try get more money out of me.
Thankfully never a problem with Dollar but I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee booked for next Friday, hopefully I will get something good. I will print off the Dollar website showing the Ford Escape is a smaller SUV. I might nip out to the garage before going to the desk see what they have, its only a 2 min job at Tampa, cars are right behind the desks.

Hello all, thanks for the replies and I'll try and answer some questions :)

disneyholic - we had a little game going towards the end of the trip watching all the cars that went past us or that we passed to see what the drivers were doing, I would say that easily 75% were at least on the phone, some were texting and one person was on the phone wile reading a map doing 60pmh on the I4 :)

Elise - I was sure when we collected the car that it was a different category but was far too flustered to argue as the Ford looked adequate and I couldn't see any Jeeps, however the two receipts I have from dollar (one on pickup and one on dropoff) both state that the Ford is class IFAR while the Jeep is SFAR so I wont accept anything other than a refund of the difference otherwise I'll take it further so I'll let you know how I get on.

wayneg - I have a response from the great one I feel like I've finally made it :). You are very right that eating out is always so subjective to the person/family eating and also the staff at the time and peoples opinions will always be different as they expect/experience different things. I love CG from the 2 visits I've had and I also totally agree about the yachtsmans as we went there last year and felt that it was good but no better than a 1 credit meal, it's also the same way we felt about Jiko but I'm always willing to give places more than one chance :). Haven't done Narcossee's yet but we're making a point of trying them all while the free dining still exists to maybe on the next trip :). The only 2 credit restaurants so far for me that I still class as 2 credits have been CG and Artists Point, but it's free food so I'm always willing to go back to many places :).
As for Dollar, I'm sure from other peoples reports and discussions (including some points that you raised) I'm sure that Orlando and to a lesser extent Sanford are the worst by far in the area so maybe they will give you less hastle at Tampa again. No wonder the car hire companies are meant to be getting investigated by the local council as this is now just accepted as the norm with most of the companies now to scam tourists as they arrive. The one thing that has annoyed me the most and I will bring this up with them if they start to fight me on the matter is that it's very hard to justify them stiffing over a customer that has paid for one of the more expensive vehicles and paid in advance, which also doesn't give them any excuse for not having the vehicle ready, but we'll see.

Chilly - I'm trying to motivate myself to do a trip report, honest :)

Sorry you had such a bad start to the trip but sounds like you had a great time overall.

Hi and welcome home :goodvibes

I hear you on the wheelchairs. I have never had to use one/accompany anyone using one, but we had a small taste of pushing "wheels" this year when we met up with friends who had a stroller. Lol, I don't think I could EVER do Disney even with a stroller, never mind a wheelchair!!

Great to hear more good reviews on VA flights :thumbsup2

How is your DW feeling now? I admire your holiday spirit for just making the best of a nasty situation and getting on and making it a memorable trip. Will you be posting some piccies?

Welcome back! Sounds like you had a great time despite the bad start :thumbsup2 hope your wife feels better now :goodvibes

We did have a good time and the DW is getting there, the latest batch of anti-biotics should be kicking in soon so we'll see if they do the trick :)

Really sorry to hear your DW was so poorly in the beginning:sick:

I have to say being a wheelchair user myself, its soooo much easier having a disibilty in the USA than it is here in the UK, you should try using a wheelchair over here :scared1::scared1:

I take my ECV now which does come in handy though if people do get in your way, its soooo unfortunate when you endup running over there toes :rolleyes1:rolleyes1

Glad to hear your DW improved over the holiday:thumbsup2

Just as way of an update, just received a mail from dollar saying they are going to refund $150 (so around £100) not quite the difference I'm seeing now on the website but saying as though I can't prove what the difference was then I'll take the cash

At least they have refunded you - did they acknowledge the error or just goodwill?

I hope they train the staff at MCO in light of this as it is obviously a recurring theme.

They have acknowledged the error and apologised that I received a smaller vehicle than booked.

My wife is getting there the infection still hasn't cleared as the cough is still there but it is getting lighter so hopefully it's on its way out
