Got back in early yesterday morning, too tired to post yesterday (I'm one of those unfortunate people who cannot sleep on a plane, no matter what
)
We've had a fantastic week - won't do a trip report because most days were spent lazing on the beach, in the pool, doing watersports.
So -
HIGHS:
- Getting upgraded to Virgin's Upper Class on the way out to St Lucia - what a fantastic experience
- St James Club, our resort, just as we thought the Caribbean would look like and our room was fantastic. Our balcony overlooked the beach and the bay, with a lovely prettily lit walkway out to the pier in the middle
We were on the end of a block and there were pretty mauve flowers climbing down, we were on the top (3rd) floor and the hummingbirds would come visit us to get pollen from these Thunbergia flowers. Beautiful. The food was delicious as well, and plenty of it.
The Staff at the resort were incredibly friendly and could not do enough for you. Whilst we're used to receiving good service in America, the staff - and the other islanders we met - were really helpful, friendly and charming - and as it was an all inclusive resort, they weren't even doing it for tips.
- St Lucia is a beautiful island. We didn't see much on the 1.5 hr transfer on arrival since it went dark pretty much straight away after 6.30pm, but we could tell it was very mountainous. The road from the international airport to our resort on the NW coast was probably only 15 miles as the crow flies but because of the mountains, it takes 1.5 hours.
We did the all day safari, but opted for the mini bus in the morning rather than the jeep as it was very hot and humid. This trip takes you to a couple of delightful fishing villages, to the Botanical Gardens - gorgeous flowers and trees - and the Diamond Waterfalls. Around this area we began to get our first view of the Pitons, St Lucia's most famous landmark mountains. We then went on to the drive-in volcano and hot springs which smelt sooooo bad, no kidding. All the journey we were looking at the amazing sights of banana and coconut plantations all around. We then had lunch at the Fond Deux Plantation where we learnt all about the cocoa bean and how it's made into chocolate, yum yum.
From here we travelled to Soufriere where the Pitons are, rising magnificently from the sea to over 2800 ft high. This is where we boarded our catamaran for the return 2.5 hour trip back to Rodney Bay by sea, stopping along the way at a resort for a swim or three or four (to cool off).
Katie bought a huge conch shell here which sounds like the QE2 coming in when it's blown
. . . she's only allowed to blow it once a day now (but sure the novelty will wear off soon).
Katie had some of her hair braided - she has short hair, but they managed to get a load in the top of her hair, looks really cute.
LOWS:
- Having to come home
- took me 4 days to get used to sitting around doing nothing other than lazing!
The only other "low", if you can call it that, is the weather was so hot I spent the best part of the first three days hiding underneath one of the palm trees on the beach to keep out of the sun, as my skin tends to go a lovely shade of lobster before slightly brown, even with my factor 60
.
I'm sure we'll be back there some time soon, it's such a great place to go. We had an absolutely marvellous holiday, thank you St Lucia.
