We just arrived home last night from a week at WDW. We spent our first 2 nights in a studio at the BCV and the rest of the week in a standard view 1br at BWV. The resorts were just about the best part of our stay, though we did have fun at the parks as usual.

We checked into the BCV at about 10:30 am Saturday 10/25. We were able to get our room immediately.. room 270, second floor, overlooking the canal where we discovered a large number of turtles! We could also see the pool. We did see the alligator one morning...he's a big one! The room was in perfect condition and even the pull out sofa was very comfortable. Oh, I did notice that the upper lock on the balcony door didn't work, which was a little bit of an issue with my 3yo who liked being on the balcony a lot....naked. I've seen several issues with the BCV being brought up recently...and honestly, I did not experience any of them. Remembering comments on the cleanliness of the railings near the pool, I did notice that the ones over the canal needed cleaning....but it really wasn't a huge issue. Nothing really appeared dingy or in disrepair....quite the opposite, in fact. We also enjoyed Stormalong Bay, though I was a little disappointed that they no longer have the Rising Sands and the small slide out on the shipwreck was not working.

On Monday we moved to BWV....where we were also able to check into our room immediately...1101, first floor right across from the bus stop. I had requested a particular room that we love...but it wasn't available. I do wonder if the check in CM had meant it wasn't available at all, or just not at that exact moment....I wish I had been more specific and let them know that we didn't need the room immediately. As it was, we dropped our check in packet in the room and headed to Epcot for the day! The first floor room had its advantages though....we had very easy access to the bus stop, pools and boardwalk. No worries about kids climbing railings. But we did discover that if we were to leave the bathroom door open while the drapes were opened that the bus stop was visible from the toilet! We took care to not provide a view that no one would want! We also just weren't as likely as usual to keep the curtains open because of all the traffic at the check in area...the feeling that we were in a fish tank on display...so that was the down side of being on the first floor. This room was also in perfect condition...though the sofabed here was not nearly as comfortable as the one at BCV. Luckily, I didn't have to sleep on it.

We attended MNSSHP on the 30th....which was sold out and very crowded. If we were to do this again in the future we'd go to an earlier party. Seems to me they sell a few too many tickets to make it enjoyable for all. And there is really no way to do it all....even if you don't plan to ride the rides!

On Halloween night we went down to the Halloween party on the Boardwalk. This was great and we're glad we had planned to check it out. This was mostly for the kids...with quite a few fun activities and crafts for them to do. Plus, Mickey was there in his ghost costume and there was a dj who did a great job getting the kids up and dancing. Then there were trick or treat stations all along the boardwalk and in the shops. It was a very nice, low key event....not too long or too crowded. Very enjoyable. If we do Halloween at WDW again we will definitely plan to spend the evening here.

All in all we found the parks fairly crowded this past week. Not as crowded as in July or the weekend before the press event earlier in Oct.....but still much more crowded than we've experienced since way back in 1992. Makes it hard when you have a 3yo who doesn't understand what it means to have a 40 minute wait for a ride she really wants to go on and there's no fastpass available! It seems that for the past several years we haven't had to plan around the crowds...and this trip we definitely had to do that.

I'll be happy to answer any questions....we had a nice vacation, though somehow I don't feel it was one of our best. I still haven't figured out why because all the individual details were okay.

Thanks for the report, Lesley. Sounds like your past trips have been in low peak times, and dealing with crowds can be a shock. I remember my DD at 3 at DL, looking at a line and telling us "it's too long, we come back later". She learned that from her Dad. But the good thing about DVC is, you get to try again! Better luck next time, glad the BW Halloween party was a hit. Diana

We also enjoyed Stormalong Bay, though I was a little disappointed that they no longer have the Rising Sands and the small slide out on the shipwreck was not working.

What si rising sands and was the small slide just down temporarily? I hope so cause my littel ones ejoyded that and we are going abck next summer. Thansk for your report!

This is fantastic! Your BCV/BWV plan is exactly what we're planning to do in May....

2 nights in a BCV Studio, then 7 in a Std BWV 1-Bedroom!

Our kids will be 9 and 7, and this will be their first stay @ Stormalong Bay. So, we're going to try and spend some decent pool there on each of our 3 days at BCV. One thing we're wondering about is whether or not we should still plan a day at a water park, or if SAB will quench their waterpark desire...

I'd also like your opinion on bus v. car while staying in that area. Usually, we're at OKW and have a car - and we usually use it to all parks (with the possible exception of MK). Did you have a car, and did you use it much? What was the bus transportation like to MK and AK? I presume the buses are shared between the BC/YC, Dolphin, Swan and BW - were there enough to service that large an area, or did many full buses pass you by?

TIA, Jeff

Jjohns - regarding the buses.

Having just returned from BWV I can comment on them from that perspective.
The walk to Disney-MGM is just over ten minutes, the walk to Epcot is just over five minutes.
We didn't have to wait more than ten minutes for buses to the other parks, Downtown or the water parks. The BWV is the last stop before the parks so we did have to stand on one occasion but normally there was plenty of room.
On the return journey the BWV is the last stop so it is much easier to get off at the first stop (Swan) and walk over the bridge (less than five minutes).
On our last day we were in a rush to get back from Downtown to pick up our ride to the airport. Rather than wait for the bus we hopped into a taxi which cost $7.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Sounds like a great trip! Thanks for sharing!

Let's see....

Actually, we visited in July of 2002 and it wasn't quite as crowded as it was this October....and we really had no problems Thanksgiving and that following weekend last year....I really think the attendance is up, unless the crowds just seemed unusually large because of things not being run at full capacity. I really don't know. Perhaps a combination of both. But I know my dh and I were both saying we must be spoiled from coming so much when the crowds were lower. I know its been reported that the Fairy Tale packages really hauled people in this fall.

The Rising Sands was an area at SAB where there were fans or something under the sand that made it very loose and you'd sort of sink down in it when you stepped on it. It was pretty cool, though I guess it took too much maintenance or something. The small slide was only down temporarily.....according to the lifeguard they had just fixed something on it routinely and then the next time they went to run it the pump started smoking! That was Saturday....and it wasn't up and running yet on Sunday....but they said they hoped to have it back again within a day or two. My kids would have loved it...and I'm not sure when we'll stay at BCV again, so it was a little bit of a disappointment. But, hey, things happen.

We'll be in a standard view studio in May...perhaps we'll see you there, Jeff. We definitely enjoyed staying the 2 nights at BCV and the rest of the week at BWV, though it got a bit more complicated for us because we ended up coming down a day earlier and staying at the Best Western at DTD our first night and then we extended our stay to try to catch up with friends from PA who were arriving Sat. and stayed at the Wyndham Palace our last night (and we didn't even end up catching up with our friends!). So we did too much moving around...and we're looking forward to staying in just one place sometime in the future. We've always moved at least once during a trip...so we're going to try it the other way around. I think the weekend in a studio then moving to a 1br really works well though.

I don't know if I'm the best person to ask about water parks since we're not huge swimmers to begin with. We're not the type to go out to the pool every afternoon...too tiring! SAB was plenty for us. We all spent one afternoon there...and the following day my dh and 8yo ds went out for a few hours while our 3yo dd took a nap. Personally, I wouldn't do a water park during a trip where we stayed at BCV...but we don't do a water park every trip anyway. I think we're a few years away from our kids really wanting to do them....our 8yo is not yet a strong swimmer and we have a baby on the way. So, I guess I'm saying that its not necessary for my family....but things may be different for yours.

Bus vs. car....on our last few trips we used our car heavily and we really just parked it this time and used Disney transportation. I really hate parking the car and having either a long walk or a tram ride, so we decided to use Disney transportation at all costs this time. Also, my 3yo loves the busses...she considers a bus ride as part of the WDW experience. We had no bus trouble at all this trip....though I am still annoyed that they insist on making all the Epcot area resorts share one bus most of the time (we did experience 2 times when they had separated the busses so that the Swan and Dolphin shared one bus and the YC/BC/BW shared another....and that was very nice! So perhaps they are beginning to address the problem with busses being full) The worst situation was after the Halloween party when we ended up on a standing room only bus with too much stuff and a sleeping 3yo....but we could have chosen to wait for the next bus so we would have had seats and might have had time to pack our stuff up better. Not a complaint at all, because I don't really expect anyone to give up their seat when I could choose to wait for the next bus, but this was the first trip where I've been pregnant and/or carrying a sleeping child and not had a seat offered to me. We didn't have any problem where busses passed us by because they were full...but we either were headed out very early or after the main rush to the parks was over. We didn't try the busses to DTD....after several bad experiences with those we always drive there. On our last morning we actually had to pass on the first bus we saw to AK because my dh was still in the hotel, but another came by in a matter of minutes. All in all we were quite pleased with the bus service. We always have our car, but we prefer to leave it parked. Our last couple of visits we used it because in July we stayed at the All Stars and the bus stop was always mobbed and earlier in Oct. we were at the Wyndham Palace and decided that driving was better than their bus service after trying it once.

Now that I think about it, I think one of the things that bothered me this trip is that the other guests at the parks, etc....seemed particularly badly behaved and rude. We saw a lot more of the "its all about me" attitude among others....line jumping, littering, shoving between me and my kids, spitting, ignoring cast members who were trying to keep order or mouthing off to them, complaining that the CM's weren't being accomodating enough to them (for some rather bogus reasons...reminded me of the "Kevin" story)...all in all it wasn't just crowded, but I saw a lot of awful behavior from other guests (and it wasn't just kids...most of the worst offenders were well into middle age....). You could almost see the relief on CM's faces when they realized you weren't about to give them a hard time about something. It kind of made it hard to be easy going because we were surrounded by so much negativity.

But we did have a lot of great experiences too...thanks to some of the wonderful CM's...so it wasn't a total loss and I think we'd consider going back for Halloween again sometime.

Oh, I did notice that the upper lock on the balcony door didn't work, which was a little bit of an issue with my 3yo who liked being on the balcony a lot....naked.

LOL! that sounds like something my DS would do!

Welcome back and thanks for the great report!

I am SOOOOOO glad to hear that the transition from a brief stay at BCV to a long stay at BWV was a good one! We are planning on staying a wkend in a 2br at BCV on cash, then moving to BWV std view 2br for 8 nights next August. Like you, we thought it would be great to take advantage, if but briefly, of SAB, and get a "taste" of BCV for future reference. Did you have WDW move your stuff, and if so, did that go smoothly? How painful would it be to then, at the end of an 8 nt stay, to move AGAIN back over to BCV? We are thinking of adding 3 more nights -- not sure whether to stay put at BWV or go back to BCV and enjoy a second helping of it.... (or maybe we should try for SSR.... hmmmm) And BTW -- what room were you originally "hoping" for at BWV? I have a 3 yr old nudist (and escape artist) too -- I don't think 1st floor would work for us! I've got visions of her making a streak for the bus stop....

AS FOR WATER PARKS (Jeff) -- our boys are aged 8 and 7, and last trip my dh took them to TL. Now, they loved the BWV pool, they loved the VWL pool, but holy cow ALL they EVER talk about now is TL and can they pleeeeeeze go back again?!?! I can't really compare that to SAB (we've not "done the SAB" yet) but I can say that if they are water lovers, the WDW parks are a REAL hit! They actually want to do both water parks next time - to heck with the other parks. DD (aged 3) is raring to go, too (I didn't take her last year because she is too darn fearless and would take on more water than Spongebob in just the first 15 minutes -- she' much more "sea-worthy" now...) She's seen enough of the Disney Beach Party Sing-Along tape to know that the water parks are where she wants to be!!

If nothing else -- see how your crew likes SAB. If they tire of it, 'nuf said, stick with the parks. But if you have to pry them out, or if they "wish" there was even MORE to it... try TL or BB! Just one note of warning -- something about water is like Kryptonite to the human body. My crew came back physically DRAINED by 5 pm... more drained than they ever did after all day/night at the park. It's a real workout -- plan a day of laze and leisure to recover afterwards!

Sorry I'm so long-winded....

CK1 - You sure don't have to tell me about how much the kids like water parks! We went to Typhoon Lagoon the previous October - that was a big hit. Just last month we went to Blizzard Beach - an even bigger hit. On our trips, we always reserve one of the last day's as 'choice day', where the kids get to pick a park/ride/place/thing they want to do - it could be a repeat or something we didn't get to. My DS (8) picked a second water park day (Typhoon Lagoon this time).

I guess I need to plan a water park day later in our May trip! LOL

As for being exhausted... same for us! Which is ironic since we plan the water park on our 'off' day! LOL. At least, it is a 'get up late day' which is a break for us since we always use EE.

My theory on that is that you actually do more walking (and almost all of it is really 'climbing') at a water park than you ever do at a theme park. And, for that, Typhoon Lagoon is definitely worse that Blizzard Beach - many of their climbs go up and down which increases the total amount climbed. Blizzard Beach, while the hills are higher, at least just goes up!

Since your kids have discovered the water parks, I highly recommend BB. Having now been to both, it is our family favourite.

Jeff

On moving from BCV to BWV....

We moved our own stuff because our room was convenient to the self parking at BCV and we preferred not to put everything in storage at BWV in the event our room wasn't ready. We have used Disney's luggage transfer in the past, from VWL to BWV, and it worked out great. If you're having them transfer your luggage it wouldn't be a problem, imo, with moving back again for a few more days....but that's all a personal preference thing and it really doesn't cost you more than a couple extra tips. We don't generally mind packing up as long as we don't do it too often. But I think we've overdone it a few times....4 hotels in 6 nights one time...and last week we ended up in 4 hotels in 9 days (because we added a first and last night via priceline, both ended up being at DTD area hotels). It was too much. But really, as long as I'm not moving every day or every other day the whole trip, it doesn't bother me too much. And its much easier if you aren't handling your own luggage.

On the Kryptonite effect....
I tend to think its because swimming uses the muscles all over your body that its so tiring (and that's why its such good exercise too!). I think those who "relax" by going to a pool don't really do much swimming! Also, I know people who believe the tiredness is also an effect of taking in so much chlorine through the skin.

Jeff, definitely plan on a water park day or two if your kids are that into them! I don't think SAB would cut it for those who love the water parks that much. I think a big part of why we haven't done one in a while is that we have regular annual passes...so we don't really plan off days from the main parks, we just take it easy every day. I'm sure when the kids get older it will be a must-do for us though!
