Over the summer my two girls (4 & 6) are going to be watched by 2 of their teachers in their homes (they live in the same town as us). It will be 2-3 days a week, for about 9 hours each day - I'm going to provide lunchs and snacks. When talking to one of them, I asked what they were planning on charging, and she said that she was going to leave that up to me. I have NO IDEA what to pay. They are adults with their own kids (who will be home some of the time). There is another camp that is $660 for the entire summer, and thats from 7am-6pm, just to give you an idea. We live in NJ.

Any thoughts are appareciated - thanks!

I'd say at least $50 per day. Now, if a sitter was coming to your house, I'd say $12 an hour. I'm a little confused - do they live together?

My daughter charges $8 for the 1st child and $4 for each additionally child per hour. So for 2 children it would be $12. The exception to her rule is if they are under 2 she charges $10 per hour. She will be 17 Saturday.

We live in Northern VA and this tends to be on the low end but she has some regular clients with 2-3 children so it works for her.

That is tricky. Are you only going to pay them if your children stay there or are you going to give them a flat rate for the week?

You say 2 or 3 days. That means that the teachers have to make themselves available for 3 days a week even if you don't have them there.

At 250/week that is 1000/month more or less. That is a little less than 10/hr if you calculate 3 days times 9 hrs.

I am assuming the camp is per kid which makes it 1320 total?

DD16 has been watching a girl during the summer. The girl is in 2nd grade now. DD gets paid ~$7/hour or ~$250/week.

I charge $70 a day for two kids at my house and their parents provide everything. I don't know that you can you use the camp as a guide because it could be subsidized by the local government, YMCA, or whoever is sponoring it. (Not sure what kind of a camp it is.)

Running the numbers, $660 for the entire summer comes to about $60 a week. 11 hours a day x 5 days comes out to be about $1.00 per hour. I don't know anyone that would be willing or able to compete with that price.

My rate(Chicago suburb) is $40/day for part time or $170/week.

I can't imagine that anyone would be willing to watch two children for $1.00 per hour.

That is probably per child.

I'm sure it is. The rates that I gave are also per child.

The OP said that 2 teachers were going to be watching her 2 children. If the rates is $1220 for the summer for both kids, that comes out to about $1.00/hour for each teacher.

I assume that she is going to the children's home. That sounds like a fair rate. However, in this case, the OP's children will be watched at the sitters' home.

DH is off every other Friday, so we will know what weeks will be 2 and which would be 3. I would never ask someone to be available, and then not show - that doesn't even make sence.

I want to do one flat rate per 9 hour day - If its $10/hour that would be $90 - to me, that seems high. But I've never paid for babysitting before, so I may just be out of the loop.

And no, the teachers don't live together, but they are close, about 3 blocks away from one another. Another thing is one of the teachers asked if it would be OK if she took my girls to the local pool on the days that her kids are there.... I'm not too keen on it, but I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world...

I pay $50 a day for my mother to watch my DS3 in my home. She also watches other children there as well.

I would pay the same as a daycare center would be. They are $50 a day around here. You provide all food. That is also per child. It would be $100 a day for 2 children.

Yes, you are out of the loop. 90/day for 2 kids is getting off easy. You are at the minimum there.

I pay $60 a day for 1 child. She can stay up to 12 hours w/out a rate change. She rarely stays the entire time but it would come out to $5 an hour. I'd offer $250 a week for the 4 days and $300 for the 5 days with you providing everything and hope they go for it!

I pay my sitter $15 an hour to babysit my 2 1/2 year old. I'm also in NJ. I asked around and that is the going rate.

NJ here also.. I am watching an 8yo this summer $80 for the week.

Seeing some of these amounts is the reason I am not working full time out of the house.. paying $90 + a day for 2 or more kids I would be paying more than I make
