I have not really been able to find the information I am looking for so I thought I might come here.

I have been noticing that on DS's baby teeth there are places that look almost clear rather than white - this is mostly near the edges of his teeth.

Should I be concerned and take him to the dentist?

DD#2 has a brown spot on her tooth. I first had her pediatrician look at it, he said it was fine...just discoloration. When I took DD#1 in for her dental checkup I did have her pediatric dentist look and he also agreed it was fine. If you have a regular pediatric appointment soon, I would first let the doctor see it before paying the extra cost. The impression I got was that discoloration on baby teeth is somewhat normal.

I was told that because my mother took an antibiotic during her pregnancy, the color of my teeth were affected. I'd ask your dentist about this -

becka, my daughters teeth were the same way. She has been seeing a dentist every six months since she was 2. There is nothing to worry about with it. The front teeth were the ones that looked "clear" to me. Like the others said, check with your pediatrician next time you go.

DS#1 has this also. He has it on permanent teeth too. Dentists said it can be caused by a couple things. #1 is high fevers during tooth formation, which he had. It can also be caused by too much floride. Don't let babies have more than a dot of toothpaste on toothbrushes at any age until they are old enough to rinse and spit.

RNMom - yes, too much floride caused DH to have brown discoloration on his adult teeth. I had forgotten about that!
Thanks!!!!

My kids both have discolored baby teeth. However, their problem was lack of nutrition and poor dental hygiene when they were in Russia.

As they are losing them, our DS's teeth are white and beautiful. Our DD's, however, never formed enamel over them properly, so we are in for some big bills for crowns when she gets older. The dentist said that this was also caused by poor nutrition. :(

RUDisney - I just wanted to say how much I admire you for adopting from Russia - congratulations!!!!!

Thanks for the help!

I will probably go ahead and make an appointment with a pediatric dentist just for my peace of mind.

Thanks! It's been a very fun and interesting ride so far. It just keeps getting better and better.

We adopted from Ethiopia years ago but the placements were disrupted for various reasons - the children's teeth were in very bad shape and they had never learned to brush, etc. Our dentist was gracious and patient with them. At least they had all their dental and medical needs met by the time other families were found for them.

It's a very hard and expensive challenge to adopt foreign children - we had one birth son, and two domestic adoptions (Kayla and Michael) previous to the Ethiopian adoptions.

My best to you and yours always!

Rae
