We just came to an agreement on a DVC purchase. We probably won't be able to book until late March. Will a studio or 1 bedroom be available in AKL, SSR, or Boardwalk? We plan on going mid to late May.

Your best bet would be to try 31 to 35 days before the time you want. This will give you the best chance at cancellations, which must be done before 30 days in order to recover the full value of the points.

DVC should run close to 100% capacity so the odds are not good.

But I agree with the above poster right before the 31 day mark is probably the best chance of someone needing to cancel doing so before the holding period.

As it appears you will be a new owner FYI just because you see DVC units on the Disney site available does not mean they will be available to DVC members on points. They are different inventories. It is a question we get a lot.

some of the points we acquired expire May 31, 2011. Can I use these to make an RCI reservation and travel after May 31? To do this, are the points transferred to RCI and do they have an expiration date?

I will be watching your post closely, and I hope to get some answers for our family as well. We are waiting to close on a purchase of BWV. We will have over 200 banked points from 2009 after we close that have to be used before 5/31/11. We went to ROFR on friday 1/21/11 so until we get into the system we're unable to make a reservation.

GOOD LUCK

I was able to extend our May trip last year by 5 nights. I did this about 5-6 weeks before we left. I ended up with a studio at BWV. Some of the nights were available when I called, and I waitlisted for the others. I could have booked a split stay immediately when I called. Our trip was over Memorial Day last year.

We are in the same boat! We are in ROFR for an SSR contract with all its 2009 points that expire at the end of Sept, but were hoping to book a trip over Memorial Day weekend as it is my DD's birthday.
You can rent a SSR one bedroom cash for this weekend (and get 40% off!). I hope we can get something!!

I changed our plans really close to our trip last May. I think it was around 6 weeks out. We went the weekend before Memorial Day and the first weekend of Star Wars Weekends. Unless it's a special event or some other big thing, you can usually get into SSR or OKW. They are huge resorts.

Also you can always waitlist. Last week I just booked a two night stay for a friend at the end of Feb (marathon weekend and all). I originally had to book one night and wait list the second one (SSR). I also waitlisted a different resort (AKL) for both nights. The 2nd waitlist came through in days. (Not always the case, but we got lucky!):goodvibes

Good Luck

I can't speak re: 1 bdrm, but I booked a studio last week for May1-May7. The only studios available were OKW and SSR. I chose OKW, and am waitlisted for BCV and BWV. Good luck!

Generally on such short notice the two resorts likely to have availability are SSR and OKW, as previous posters have noted. Within a certain number of days of any given date (somewhere between 30-60 days), I believe that unreserved DVC rooms are made available to Disney to sell on a cash basis. Two things that can significantly impact whether unreserved DVC rooms will be available at OKW or SSR in early April for a May trip are:

1. Whether there are any promotions available at that time. Periodically over the last two years, Disney has offerred a 40% discount on DVC villas. if there is a similar promotion, then DVC rooms that are made available to Disney at the applicable 30-60 day window may sell out quickly.

2. Periodically Disney has given free upgrades to people booked at value resorts and moved them to either OKW or SSR when the rooms were available to free up rooms at the lower booking rates at the values and market the DVC rooms to those people. If that happens, SSR and OKW can fill up pretty quickly.
