Have many people tried to do this. We tried last year and it may have been the timing (Late August) but we couldn't get in at 7 months and ended up paying for a cash stay.
We really love it there and are hoping to go every 2 - 3 years for our family's Disney trip.
We are currently members at SSR and plan to keep that plan. However we are looking into adding points and VGC are sold out and there are no resales at this time that work for us.
So I am considering adding on at another resort. But because I want to book at VGC every few years I was wondering if we really just need to wait it out and buy points there. I am looking for others oppinions I guess.

Thanks
Heidi

Have you contacted Disney to make sure they have no points to sell you? Even when it is sold out, they do sometimes have points around.

If what you really want is more points so you can book at VGC, then I would hold out and buy there. Since you have already had some bad luck booking at the 7 month mark, it would make sense to me that you would want some points so you can take advantage of the home resort booking time.

Good luck!

We are on a waitlist with Disney for the VGC points. They really have none right now. :(

I am thinking it is worth it to buy the VGC points. I am just looking at the price difference and it is crazy. But I think we will probably wait. I am thinking that we will mostly be traveling there in Feb. or April. That seems to not be a crazy time for booking but who knows.

We were successful with this June 12-17 in a 1 bedroom at 7 months out. We own at HH and BLT.

It depends on when you want to go. We originally were going to just use our SSR points to book our birthday and anniversary stays. But had trouble booking a studio late January and July. Finally after many unsuccessful calls and a family discussion, we added on VGC points. If you choose to not to buy, then I think you need to be persistent and flexible in your dates.

I think it would meet your needs best to own at VGC so that you have that 11 month window. We want to stay there, too, and are renting points for this June. Then we are buying a resale contract there, even though it is a different UY than we own at BCV. Since we don't see ourselves using BCV points in CA or VGC points anywhere else but CA, we think it is safe for us to have two different UYs.

When I was talking with my guide a few weeks ago, there was just a short wait list for VGC. Maybe things have changed and there are more people in line. While you are waiting, maybe a resale contract you like will show up! Good luck!

We were successful getting a 1 bedroom for July 24 & 25 at the 7 month mark. Once I got over the fact that it was 52 pts a night, I was excited.

We were able to get a 2 bdr at the 7 month mark over Father's Day last year. We were unable to get a 2 bedroom right after Thanksgiving at the 6 month mark. When we add on it will be at the GCV too. :thumbsup2

We rented points fora 2 bedroom at VGC last August through a DVC owner at SS at 7 months and got just what we wanted.

I was able to get a studio for 5 nights at around 6 months out. Last year I got a studio in May at 7 months.

If I ever see a 50 pt or so contract up a vgc I will jump on it. Would love to have the flexibility of getting the 11 month window there. Would hope that DVD considers another DLR resort.

There is a 50 point out there right now. Just so you know.

We own at VGC but our two trips there were April 2010 and February 2011 (next week!). We booked both about 3 months out. Albeit, April and February are not really heavy times. We're aiming at June 2012 (2 bedroom) and June 2013 (Grand villa) and will definitely book those at 11 months.

I don't know if this helps, but late last year, my wife and I "stole away" from the kids for two nights, and decided to go to DLR without the kids. On the off chance, I called member services about availabity that night, and the night after for a studio at the VGC...no luck for that night, but the next night had an opening! So in that case, we enjoyed a (private!) night in a VGC studio with only one day advanced notice!

For our next stay (after our MR cruise on the Disney Wonder), we booked a 2BR and a studio (2 nights) at about 9 months out with no problem...although we are waitlisted (fingers crossed!) for the GV instead.
