Auto Train on 7/4 - help with upgrade

We are taking the auto train on 7/4. I've seen in many posts that there is a possibility I can upgrade from coach to a sleeper for a reasonable cost.

First, what is considered a reasonable cost?
Second, should we get there really early to check in to try and do this? Do they have a limited number and give them all away quickly?

My husband and I will be traveling with our 2 kids, age 7 and 5. Any other help or hints would be greatly appreciated!

We did this in March.

When we arrived in Lorton, we immediately went to the desk and asked about an upgrade. They said a cabin was available for an additional $100 or so. We took it, and OMG were we ever glad we did. What a difference! I think it was the best $100 we ever spent

The way back was a different story. We got to Sanford and asked about an upgrade and were told we'd be put on a waiting list (bear in mind...this was in March and the Sanford station was FULL of 'snowbirds' heading back north for the spring).

The cost, if upgraded, would be another $300. We said 'no thanks'.

So, do you think it's best if we try to get there pretty early to see if we can get one?

I agree- it would be well worth the $100.

Another question- what sleeper cabin would we need- we have 2 adults and 2 kids- age 7 and 5.

Unfortunately, Amtrak's policy governing onboard upgrading of accomodations has changed. There may be no more savings to be had by purchasing onboard than you could have obtained by reserving ahead of time.

Basically, the new procedures sell unsold first-class (sleeper) accomodations at the full rate of the lowest fare bucket (price level). Depending on a combination of factors, you can obtain the exact same price reserving weeks or months earlier. In some unusual circumstances, it could cost more to upgrade onboard than at the time you made reservations.

There are multiple fare levels for any train. The number of seats and rooms on each train priced at a certain level varies by demand; around July 4th for instance, more seats are priced at the higher levels. The lowest fare seats are sold first (you are always quoted the lowest available fare at the time you make the request), going up the scale to the highest price point for the last remaining seats.

The best strategy is still to reserve as far ahead of time as possible. If you are initially reserving the day before departure during summer, for example, the cheapest sleeper accomodation to be obtained would be the price you can get right then - on the train your total fare would (probably) be higher.

We used the auto train last May and my husband also upgraded at the desk for about $100 . the best room if you can get it is the family bedroom -2 long beds and 2- short beds. for info you can call the phone onthe website and they can give you your options.
