This was a narrow, undivided, and forested highway with one lane in each direction. The best I can tell is that there was construction going on with an automated one-way light control for a single lane segment, which happened to be on the left in his direction. But apparently after that section he continued in the left in his lane for about two miles before he hit a Ford Taurus head on. Reports were that he was going 55-60 MPH. This doesn't mention it, but others mention it was two misdemeanors.

I have always been reluctant to drive in countries that drive on the opposite side as the US because I am afraid I will forget and be on the wrong side of the road.

The closest I have come is renting a golf cart in the Bahamas and driving around Bimini.

Wow, that's just awful. Those things can certainly happen when you drive on the opposite side in your home country and so sad that it ended in loss of life and the destruction of the driver's life.

The one thing might have snapped him out of it would have been if there was at least one car at the other end waiting at the light. I was on a fairly recent trip where I saw a lot of these, which included scheduled road construction or partial road damage.

Once I rented a car in Orlando and there was a big sticker on the dashboard with an arrow pointing and saying “Stay to the right.” I suppose it was meant for UK tourists.

I’d be afraid to drive in any place where they stay to the left.
