You probably missed it in the local news, but there was a report

that someone in Pakistan had advertised in a newspaper an offer of a

reward to anyone who killed a Canadian - any Canadian.

An Australian dentist wrote the following editorial to help define

what a Canadian is, so they would know one when they found one.

A Canadian can be English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German,

Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. A Canadian can be Mexican,

African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian,

Asian, Arab, Pakistani or Afghan.

A Canadian may also be a Cree, Metis, Mohawk, Blackfoot, Sioux, or

one of the many other tribes known as native Canadians. A Canadian's

religious beliefs range from Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim,

Hindu or none. In fact, there are more Muslims in Canada than in

Afghanistan. The key difference is that in Canada they are free to

worship as each of them chooses. Whether they have a religion or no

religion, each Canadian ultimately answers only to God, not to the

government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government

and for God.

A Canadian lives in one of the most prosperous lands in the history

of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the

Charter of Rights and Freedoms which recognize the right of each

person to the pursuit of happiness.

A Canadian is generous and Canadians have helped out just about

every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking

a thing in return. Canadians welcome the best of everything, the

best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the

best services and the best minds. But they also welcome the least -

the oppressed, the outcast and the rejected.

These are the people who built Canada. You can try to kill a

Canadian if you must as other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world

have tried but in doing so you could just be killing a relative or a

neighbor. This is because Canadians are not a particular people from

a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of

freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, can be a Canadian.

It's sad that someone advertized that in the newspaper. That is a very good discription of Canadians though. It seems we welcome all with open arms.

This is a hoax chain letter that started in 2001... It started with killing "An American" and has moved it's way around most Western countries...

In the weeks following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington D.C., the e-mailing American public was bolstered by several chain letters that appeared to be rousingly supportive entreaties from international authors. Under scrutiny, however, most of these proved to be misunderstandings, or cases of mistaken identity, as in this one.

This essay was not written by "an Australian dentist," but by an associate law professor at Virginia's George Mason University Peter Ferrara. Titled "What is an American: A Primer," it was published in the National Review on September 25, 2001. The e-mail version differs from the original not only in attribution, but also contains several edits and editorial comments and omits the author's closing paragraphs.

We can't be sure where the "Australian Dentist" attribution came from, but can safely assume it is another case of "False Attribution Syndrome." Most likely, such an individual received the essay and forwarded it, inadvertently adding his identity to it. This is just one of the many hazards of forwarding chain letters. Before you forward this or any other "rent-an-opinion" chain letter, consider what would happen if you were mistake for its author...

In Australia kangaroos can drink from the age of six. What a country.

I posted this up on a site I visit quite often that is full of Yanks and they all just laughed and made fun of it saying things like Canada is to the US like light beer is to regular beer etc. So much arrogance and so liite intelligence coming from that country I must say.

I realize it is a hoax but the letter was well written and speaks the truth of Canada most people can't come to terms with our respect worldwide.

Yes -- but it's only about Canadians now because someone replaced "American" with "Canadian" and "Bill of Rights" with "Charter of Rights and Freedoms."
