How is Disney in mid-august? crowded? hot? anyone have any good or bad experiences

Mid-August?? - Still Disney!! ;)
Hot?? YES.
Crowded?? Not so much.
Hurricanes?? Maybe.
Rain? Definitely.
Good Experiences?? Going back for our third late August trip. Kids are out of school. Short lines. And besides, even Wisconsin is super hot and muggy in August. It is a great time to go. Be prepared for heat and rain. There have been a lot of threads on this topic under the Theme Park Strategies. You should be able to find lots of info.

Bad Experience?? Well, only one. Caught totally unprepared for a massive rain storm at MGM. DH managed to be on the other side of the park and the only shelter we could find was under Mickey's Hat. We and about 200 others were pelted with sideways rain for about 20 minutes---carried ponchos with us everyday without fail after that!! :thumbsup2

Have Fun!

We've been in August many times, 7-8 I think now.

Yes it's certainly hot.
From mid August onwards, the crowds lessen, as do the opeing hours often. Although I notice Mk is open till at least 10pm all August this year, good news for us!
We generally find that the only time the parks are 'fun' in August, is in the mornings. Late afternoon and evening can be so busy, that even slower rides have mammoth lines. Because of height restrictions, the scarier rides like Rockin Roller Coaster, often have shorter lines than tamer ones.
Often, fast passes are gone on busy days, sometimes by midday for things like Test track.
That all said, it's still great. Just make sure you're up early everyday to make use of the shorter lines in the morning, and if you're stayinn on site, make good use of early entry and extra magic hours.
See you there!!!:sunny:

We were there last year and had a wonderful time. We don't do the big rides and rollercoasters (back, motion sickness and coward issues) so we had no waits. I'm not exaggerating...5 times in a row on Peter Pan. 3 or 4 times in a row on POC.

The worst times were trying to meet characters and toontown in the evening. We followed UG's suggestions of which park, and were there at opening. We left around 1:30, pooled and napped, and played the evening by ear. We're early risers (thanks to DD) and figured we might as well be in a park.

It was HOT!! Heat index over 115. Spray your feet with deoderant/anti-persiperant. It WILL keep them cooler. Buy and wear the neck coolers. No one in our family moved unless everyone had a hat on. Slather on the sunscreen (we're all fair-skinned here). And go into the airconditioned places frequently!

You'll have a great time. We had such a good time we're going back this year. Unfortunatly, we will have crowds this year as our APs run out before mid-August.

We are going July 31 - August 6. I have basically accepted the fact that it's going to be too hot to describe, and really crowded. I've been to disney so many times now that we usually just take our time touring the parks. I used to go every year when I was little, we have family that lives in Kissimmee. I'm also hoping that me living in south georgia for 26 years will help me be used to the heat. I'm going to try and take some small things to entertain the kids while waiting in line (DD8 has the Disney mix Stick mp3 player) and i'll take my mp3 to help block out the noise and keep my sanity. I really wouldn't want to be anywhere else though!
