August trip?

My dh informed me that the in-laws had booked a condo on the Outer Banks for August. All the grandkids were expected to attend. Their parents are optional. i am voting for opting out. I love my kids and hate the idea of a week away, but then again, I could make the most of this time and try to get in a trip solo. Of course, budgeting will be tight, any thoughts on hotels or shared housing? I'm hoping to get the 3day hopper, and keep it all under $500, is this possible? Thanks for input.
