I presume you're female?

If so, you'll need to go all out, whole hog, formal dress, make up and shoes for an evening formal wedding. My advice would be to go to either a mid-to-higher-end department store or to a formal shop and ask the sales staff's advice.

But definitely plan on a formal dress, preferably long, although a calf-length, if very formal would also work, dress.

Now, if you're a guy, you've got it easy. Dark suit with a good tie or a tux.

Only wear a tux if the invitation indicates Black Tie or Black Tie Optional. I live in the Northeast and was married at a formal county club and many women wore knee length dresses with nice shoes. Did the invitation say Black Tie? If not, you want to be be careful about being overdressed. Even formal weddings around here, especially in the summer, do not require women to wear full length dresses and in some cases, you may feel out of place because it will appear as though you are a part of the wedding. If it's Black Tie, that's a different story....a long dress would be appropriate......

A few rules I follow. For that time of year I LOVE strapless or spaghetti straps with a wrap or some kind of chiffon over the arms. August is usually good for deep jewel colors in a summer cut, Spring is long gone and Fall is almost here so avoid pastels, they will make you look like you hit the discount rack. I usually favor midnight blue, it's a very formal color and almost always gives off a polished air. Closed shoes, such as a pump, also tend to give a more sophisticated feel. For pizazz look for a cool looking heel, but nothing too much- just a touch of trendy. Never wear white or anything close to white to a wedding.

Back when weddings were more common in my life I used to find the most beautiful dresses at bargain prices in wedding dress stores. Even a prom dress. Usually they are expensive dresses that either bridesmaids never bother to pick up or that the store can't return. The best part is that they always seem to have a seamstress on hand to make the dress perfect.

When in doubt check out 'What not to wear' on TV, they usually have good advice and also, check out current BRIDE type magazines to see what's jumping in the formal clothing department.

Good luck and have fun:goodvibes

The OP said Formal and evening and that means (or should mean) black tie. The invitation to state clearly what level of dress is expected. If the invitation is mum, OP should ask someone who is involved in planning the wedding.

And you do rarely see men in tuxes anymore outside of a narrow category of formal events. I wonder if they're becoming an endangered species. I'm sure they'll hang around at balls and such fetes, but they are becoming anachronistic.
