August 9, 2011 (8/9/2011) Taking the Wonder to see the AMERICAN CHILD

I just got the sweetest DCL mailing. :banana:It thanks us for joining them to Alaska, gives the important dates ( they seem so far away.. like April 26th 2011) and some tips like what to pack.. the list was funny!!! Not very Flordia-ish..:confused3,Sweatshirts, jackets, gloves, hats, long pants, poncho and rain gear.. ... hmm.. guess we are going to Alaska..

I got the same thing yesterday. It was a nice surprise.

I consider Alaska in the Summer to be like Fla. in the winter and pack accordingly. The weather is all over the place. I've been there in the middle of July when it was cold. And I was on the last sailing of the year of any cruiseline a few years back and everyone at the ports were stating how it was the nicest week in a month. They had just gone through a really cold spell. I rarely used any of the stuff they listed like the gloves, sweatshirts ect. But if you're going on a tour where you're standing on a glacier you'll have to dress a little different than if you take a tour to go whale watching on a catamaran. It can get a little chilly on the boat when you're doing scenic touring. That's when the balcony rooms are really nice.

What I have never ran into on any cruise was the oppressive heat that I could be dealing with back home during the same time frame.

Coming from someone who lives in Chicago and sees people bundled up at WDW in the fall and winter months while I'm very comfortable, I'd guess I've spent about 80% of my time cruising Alaska wearing shorts.

I think lists like that try to be all encompassing so they don't have people at Guest Services every day complaining.

I saw a lot of people on the Magic in Feb wearing sweatshirts on the boat in the evening.

I did not get any book... yet.... maybe it takes longer to get to Texas....

But.... Yesterday, I did book my whale watching excursion for when we are in Juneau - I booked with Harv and Marc's Alaska Outback Alaska tours - they seem to get rave reviews on another popular cruise board that specializes in all cruises. The basic price was $149 a person, and you can go up and down from there. I booked the morning tour, so that I have all afternoon to do other things.

704,159 minutes or 42,249,578 seconds to go.....

No book for us yet here in Seattle.....

I just found this great website.... at least I think it is great....

so I'm posting it here for when we need it later....

I HOPE I get to see the Aurora this year. Every time I've been in Alaska it's been overcast. One of the things my wife and I like to do on a cruise is go out on the deck (or our balcony if we have one) when most everyone else is sleeping and look at the stars. Haven't even had much luck seeing stars at night on any of our Alaskan cruises.

Found a picture of an otter in Alaska today, so kinda had to make it our own for the cruise....

For your enjoyment:
