~ Aug 2013~ Sew what... We've gotta find a way back! Part I!!

Boy all of your plans for Thanksgiving are making me tired! :faint: Athough time with family will be worth it.

Because of my DH work schedule, we never make it home for Thanksgiving. While I miss my family, it's kind of nice being just the two of us. I could eat Thanksgiving dinner in my PJ's if I wanted to! :rotfl:

Just real quick before I run out the door...

Here's the sweet potato recipe I found Diane... It looks so delicious!

Yummy Sweet Potato Casserole

Prep Time: 30 Minutes Ready In: 1 Hour
Submitted By: TINA B Cook Time: 30 Minutes Servings: 12
"My family begs me to make this creamy baked dish every Thanksgiving and Christmas. What makes it so good is the pecan topping! Try it and I'm sure it will become your new tradition!"

INGREDIENTS:
4 cups sweet potato, cubed
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 cup chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Put sweet potatoes in a medium saucepan with water to cover. Cook over medium high heat until tender; drain and mash.
2. In a large bowl, mix together the sweet potatoes, white sugar, eggs, salt, butter, milk and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth. Transfer to a 9x13 inch baking dish.
3. In medium bowl, mix the brown sugar and flour. Cut in the butter until the mixture is coarse. Stir in the pecans. Sprinkle the mixture over the sweet potato mixture.
4. Bake in the preheated oven 30 minutes, or until the topping is lightly brown.

that sounds awesome D I found one that is cooked in a crock pot that looks fabulous.

I am tempted to send her mother a card to apologize, but the other part of me just wants to slink into the corner..

Don't you dare! She should be sending you an apology card for yelling at her! Unreal....

I don't know why I go through all the trouble of using this stuff, especially when we just have my Dad and brother coming - but I guess it just makes the occasion seem so much more special. And if we don't use it for Thanksgiving and Christmas - we don't use it at all.

Bill and I just had a talk about this too. There will only be 6 of us at my house for TG and Bill thinks we should just use paper plates. But I have these gorgeous cream colored turkey ones handed down to me by my grandmother and I have never used them because I have never done TG at my house before. No way are those staying in the box down in the basement! I am using them for sure :)

D.... another reason to move to RI ---> No retail stores can open on Thanksgiving:scratchin

Hi!
I am telling you all of this just so you can understand the Absolute JOY I got from receiving Maleficent! What a great pick me up!

This bag is more amazing than the pictures showed. The colors are so deep and gorgeous! The detail is just amazing.

Thank you so much!

:goodvibes We need more pictures!!!

This turned out really cute - I just love the interior fabric!

This is so adorable.

:mic: Yep, Mother of the Year right here folks... :mic:

I doubt she'll ever be invited back to Mikayla's house again....

I am tempted to send her mother a card to apologize, but the other part of me just wants to slink into the corner...

:rotfl2:

Seriously though... she mustn't have any boys or she would be forever yelling :scared:

My mother's sorta been slowly cleaning out some of the stuff that's in the house she and my father built 60+ years ago. She's not a hoarder, but possibly a packrat, as most "children of the Depression" are, I suspect.

Last week it was Christmas stuff that I got. (Two weeks ago it was boxes and boxes of wrapping paper, bows, and gift boxes.)

Earlier today I was reading the December 1959 issue of Everywoman's Family Circle.

And what to my wondering eyes should appear?

No miniature sleighs,

no tiny reindeer,

Is that Mr. Rocketpants himself?

Or an older brother?

Or second cousin that we don't speak of in front of the women and children?

That's all.

Now back to your sewing.

:upsidedow

That would look so cute framed in that house next door to D (when you move in) so she could gaze out at it when she is up in her sewing room:wave2:

Hope V is doing better on her crutches. Are you sure she is not faking is to get out of bringing the Christmas village and dishes up from the basement? LOL.

I feel like I have been cleaning and shopping non-stop and my house is still a mess. I am waiting for my DH to finish and clean up all of his projects so I can clean in his wake. Our guests arrive on Wed and there is still much to do. Tomorrow will be busy and of course that means my sewing falls off the list. Oh well.

Would love to see MMs stocking and a picture of the Christmas village.

Diane - I love wegman's but we don't have it in GA yet. Lots of my friends in college worked there and they treated their employees very well.

I was able to get a big fresh Turkey at Target. I was having trouble finding a big one, fresh or frozen. I think I am going to get up early on Wed to finish up the rest of my grocery shopping.

If I don't make it back before Thursday I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Nini - I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Oh - I am sure that is difficult! Sounds like you are pumped for BF shopping! My neighbor and I are holding out until Saturday... We really don't have that many more gifts to get though. We are just going because we want to go. :lovestruc

We love to go shopping on Black Friday!! I can't count how many fight's I've seen over the stupidest items (0.99 towels anyone :scared1:) We go in with an idea of what we want to get and rank it in order of importance. If we don't get it all oh well but if we do.....SCORE!!! :cool1: But I will say I don't like that certain stores are opening on Thanksgiving Day. There's no fun in that!! I love the thrill of getting a couple hours of sleep then lining up in front of our store of choice a 4 am for a 6 am opening. Now I won't sleep until maybe late Friday afternoon so I'll be p going for over 24 hours!!! Got to follow those store openings!! Luckily for me my DH enjoys going with me so he gets to carry all the bags!! lol

Yesterday was a very productive day for all of us.

I started out in the sewing room, and managed to finish MM's stocking. I drew my own pattern - and if I were to make another one - I would make it slightly wider at the top. :thumbsup2 Not sure that I like it any better than any of the ones I saw in the store... but it was "free" so I won't complain.

While I was in the sewing room - Josh was cleaning the basement. It looks amazing! ::yes::

After lunch, the girls and I cleaned the main floor of the house - it was so trashed - I was even embarassed to look at it. :rolleyes1 I still need to scrub floors one day this week though.

Then Alli and I hauled up all my serving dishes from the basement, unboxed and washed/dried them all. :wizard: They are all stacked neatly and ready to go.

Then we took out the China and got that washed. It is now wrapped in a towel on my kitchen counter. We decided not to use the tea cups and saucers. We were going to wait to wash everything - but if we would have waited, we would have been trying to wash the China while Josh was making Thanksgiving dinner - and that just would have been a disaster. There is not room for more than one person in our kitchen.

We did not get the Silverware done. I will try to do that today or tomorrow.

I did find a new sweet potato recipe that I am anxious to try. Josh always does the main meal (except the make ahead mashed potatoes) - so last night, I informed him that I didn't want the "standard" sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top. So, I went in search of something different. I will probably be making those on Wednesday.

I guess I am going to town this morning to finish up my grocery shopping - I wasn't thinking, but the turkey will need time to thaw. I am quite disappointed the the price of Turkeys didn't drop this week - statistically, they always have. Oh well. So, I need to grab a few more odds n' ends that I missed the other day.

I have my to-do list all broken up, as to what I need to make each day - otherwise - I end up doing all of it on Wednesday, and then it's quite crazy. :dance3:

I can't forget to order our summer sausage and hard rolls from the meat market today though - or I will be a wreck with out them.

Sorry to totally bore you all with my ramblings.... I just have so much going through my brain right now. I feel like, if I don't type it out, I will forget. :rolleyes1

I hope everyone had a nice weekend, and I hope you are all having as much fun planning Thanksgiving as I am. :lovestruc

D~

Glad you got MM's stocking done. Hope we can see some pictures!!

Wow you've had a busy day!! Sounds like you got a lot accomplished and a lot more to get done before Thursday!!

I agree with everyone about the burping thing. I think the mom was waaay out of line yelling about something like that. It happens to everyone...even that mom! Hope the crutch mobility is getting smoother.:thumbsup2

Would love to see a pic of the stocking. I miss having a dog, but since we travel so much to see our children, it wouldn't be practical. So we enjoy our neighbors' dogs every chance we get. That gives us all the fun and none of the hassle.

You make your mashed potatoes ahead? Could you tell me what you do? Your sweet potato recipe sounds very similar to mine. We've used the same one for years and it is so delish! I have thought about switching it for a more healthy version, but decided Thanksgiving is a day we can forget about that sort of thing since the calories from Thanksgiving don't count. Just like the calories at Disney don't count, right?

I love using the good china for special times. I even started using it randomly just because they are so pretty. Of course the kids always asked who was coming over for dinner!:rotfl: Now I have these darling snowman plates that I use starting for TG and I leave them out until Feb or March. :goodvibes

DH just picked our turkeys up yesterday. I would love to have gotten them at 89 cents/lb! I paid $1.79/lb and thought that was pretty good for fresh ones. We've never done fresh before, but thought we'd give it a try.

I probably won't be on again before TG, so hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed day. One thing I am so thankful for is the wonderful people I've met on the DIS!:grouphug:

that sounds awesome D I found one that is cooked in a crock pot that looks fabulous.

Oooh - I never thought to do them in a crock pot...

ROFL... I really try to give my girls manners - I tell them frequently that they will never get married if they act like "that" at the table. :confused3 They don't care... We'll be stuck with them forever, I am afraid.

Yah Cheryl... You could frame that and hang it next door. :thumbsup2

Hope V is doing better on her crutches. Are you sure she is not faking is to get out of bringing the Christmas village and dishes up from the basement? LOL.

I suspect you are right. She went to school yesterday with out crutches, just her air cast. She is doing much better.

Oh well.

Tell me about it... Alli has had her bff over every night for the last 4 nights for piniata making... it is such a mess - but they both want the extra credit for Spanish.

Would love to see MMs stocking and a picture of the Christmas village.

I will try to take some pics this afternoon.

Diane - I love wegman's but we don't have it in GA yet. Lots of my friends in college worked there and they treated their employees very well.

I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving too Liz! :lovestruc

I guess that's one of my biggest frustrations with this whole "opening on Thanksgiving night" scenerio. Yes, the employees miss time with their families - not only that - but the general public is forced to miss times with their families as well, if they want the deals. I am just not a fan at all.

I am glad you all enjoy it and have fun though. :thumbsup2

Glad you got MM's stocking done. Hope we can see some pictures!!

Wow you've had a busy day!! Sounds like you got a lot accomplished and a lot more to get done before Thursday!!

I will try to post pictures later today.

I agree with everyone about the burping thing. I think the mom was waaay out of line yelling about something like that. It happens to everyone...even that mom! Hope the crutch mobility is getting smoother.

Yah... I think you are right.

She is getting better, she ditched the crutches yesterday.

Would love to see a pic of the stocking. I miss having a dog, but since we travel so much to see our children, it wouldn't be practical. So we enjoy our neighbors' dogs every chance we get. That gives us all the fun and none of the hassle.

LOL I will try to post this recipe this afternoon too... Yah - nothing is healthy at our house on the holidays.

I love using the good china for special times. I even started using it randomly just because they are so pretty. Of course the kids always asked who was coming over for dinner!:rotfl: Now I have these darling snowman plates that I use starting for TG and I leave them out until Feb or March.

Awesome! Sounds like my village. :thumbsup2

I think that is a decent price for a fresh turkey.

I am thankful for my Dis friends too! :lovestruc

**********************************************************

Well, I got the last of my Thanksgiving shopping done yesterday morning. I have a feeling I will need to get more flour though - with all the piniata making going on in our house lately. :confused3 I didn't get many deals yesterday, but I only had a few items left on my list - so I didn't have to spend very much.

I have to go to the dentist right away this morning... One of my back molars has started to bother me. I hope it's not too horribly painful - I am one of those people who is afraid of the dentist, and I don't like mine especially because they like to charge you for unnecessary things (like it's their standard policy to use white fillings vs. silver, they are 3x more expensive, and won't use silver unless you ask - it's in the fine print)... Imagine my surprise getting that bill - the girls each had one filling and I had one - so 3 fillings total for $600. I was so mad. I now know better and request silver - nothing wrong with it - and it has a longer lifespan.

I think I will grab flour while I am in town too. :rolleyes1

Then I hope to come home and post the requested pictures...

And work in my sewing room for a little while, before I have to start some of my TG prep.

I hope you all have a wonderful day today - and for those of you not planning to Dis over Thanksgiving - I wish for you an amazing holiday. :lovestruc

D~

That sweet potato recipe sounds yummy! I think that it does sound like the pecan topping is what makes the dish special!

Chiara- I can't use my crock pot for the sweet potatoes but that is a great idea. My crock pot will be busy because I always make hot spiced cider in the crock pot. Everybody loves it.

We have a Wegmans about 20 miles away. If we are doing some shopping for a special meal, my friend and I will make a special trip there. We will shop and then eat lunch in the Wegman's cafe. A Wegmans is supposed to open up about 5 miles from here in the spring. I can't wait!

It is great that V is already doing so much better that she could leave the crutches behind today.

think I'm caught up....was slacking on the DIS the past few days working on Megan's room reno...

congrats on winning your seat!
sorry V hurt her ankle, hope she's doing better .... boy that mom must have perfect kids who never burb :rotfl2: its a natural thing to do!
the pirate mickey set is very cute!

we are heading to my older DB for Thanksgiving, I'm bringing cheeses, summer
sausage and crackers for an appy then will be decorating the house the rest of the weekend!

hope everyone has awonderful holiday and if you are travelling, stay safe!

"Wow - you have a super crazy week coming up... And a craft swap on top of that??? LOL What were you thinking?

I hope your DH had a good birthday."

Yeah. . .I thought "I want to work on my seamstress/clothing building skills so this would be a good swap." Never crossed my mind that the crafting time was right in the middle of Birthday Central. :rolleyes2

DH had a pretty good day, considering it started out at the Doctor's office for his annual sinus infection.

We are lucky on our turkey...DH's work always gives them to the employees at Thanksgiving. And then DH cooks it and we take it over to MIL's for the actual day.

I've been thinking about making DH and I stockings, but the ones we got for our first year are still holding up, so I'm not sure I want to go to that far. I'd love to see MM's.

Happy Thanksgiving, if I don't check in tomorrow! :goodvibes

Hope the dentist went well. I need to make a birthday cake for Tg we are celebrating Js and Gs birthdays.

Do post a picture of MM's Christmas stocking!!! My mom sewed my stocking when I was little, and now I have it at my house. The funny part about it is that it is HUGE, like twice the size of the rest of my family's stockings hanging there...and it hangs backwards!!! Yep, it has my name stitched on the WRONG SIDE! :rotfl: But, mom made it and I :lovestruc it!

I know - my crock pot is busy too... I have a really big one, but we don't usually do a huge batch of sweet potatoes.

I have never heard of Wegmans. I wonder if it is like our Byerley's here? I love shopping there - carpeted floors, chandeliers - it's so relaxiing.

Yes, V is doing much better... Can't help but think she was milking it a little bit... :scratchin

Hi Lisa!!! I've been wondering where you've been - you've been a bit scarce everywhere. I hope you are having a wonderful week, and all the redecorating is going well (I would love to see pictures). :lovestruc Happy Thanksgiving if I don't see you again before.

Bummer about DH's sinus infection - I hope he is feeling better by now. That is very nice that he gets a turkey every year - I used to work somewhere that did that.

I am really sentimental, so I would leave your stockings as they are. I love tradition!

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, as well.

Hope it went well at the dentist  I'm afraid of the dentist too.

It went OK... He was nicer to me than he usually is... :confused3

Hope the dentist went well. I need to make a birthday cake for Tg we are celebrating Js and Gs birthdays.

Awww... I didn't realize that their birthdays were so close to Thanksgiving... I hope they have wonderful birthdays. :lovestruc

That is really cool that you still have your stocking, and adorable that it's sewed on the wrong side. I had to run down to the basement when I was making MM's to double check which side ours were done on too. I have my childhood stocking as well, that my foster mom knitted for me - but we don't use it. Josh's dad got us a matching set our first Chrsitmas, and gave the girls the matching ones as they came along - so that is the set that we always use.

I hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving if I don't see you back here again.

**********************************************************

The dentist was a bit crazy yesterday. Normally, he is quite rude/stuffy towards me - not sure what was different yesterday, but he was very nice and actually joked around a bit. :confused3 As I suspected, I had a large cavity on one of my back molars... After lots of pain (ahem ~ 8 novocaine shots for one tooth) he was able to get it filled - my mouth was so sore yesterday, I couldn't eat on that side at all. I was so nervous that he made it worse. But once the novocaine wore off - I realized the pain was from all the various shots, and not the tooth itself. My mouth feels a lot better this morning.

So, I came home and made my beer bread... I tried a new recipe. I tried a piece, and it's very good - however - I am not sure how well it will go with my dip?

Then I made some Garlic, Garlic dip.

Then I took a nap... Since I didn't fall asleep until 2am the night before, and my mouth pain - I was out cold for several hours.

When I woke up, I made my Sweedish Meatballs... Num - I have never made them for Thanksgiving before. I usually make them on Sunday afternoons when all we want to do it graze, so I figured they would be good to have as an appetizer. ::yes::

Josh made the Cranberry Raspberry pies last night - they look gorgeous!

Today will be equally (if not more so) crazy...

I have several more things to make... Make-ahead mashed potatoes, Jalepeno jelly dip, meat and cheese tray prep...

I also have to go to the meat market to pick up our summer sausage/roll order.

Alli needs a ride home from school tonight.

And Josh has more pies to make (2 Pecan and a Pumpkin) - he is bringing one of the pecans to work on Friday.

I know there is something else I need to do today - but I can't remember what. :confused3

Oh - I tried to upload MM's stocking pics from my phone yesterday, but for some reason - they wouldn't upload... So, I will try again today.

For those of you not Dising on Thanksgiving (I will likely be around, since I don't do much work on the actual day) - I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving full of family and friends. To those of you leaving over the weekend... safe travels and I hope you have a wonderful time in WDW! :lovestruc

I will be back later to post pics. :thumbsup2

D~

OK...

Sorry for slacking over the last few days...

I think this is everything...

MM's stocking (please ignore the dusty China cabinet - which doesn't hold China). V drew out his "M" for me:

20121120_104819.jpg

And the Make Ahead Mashed Potato recipe:

10 Large Potatoes
1 C (8oz) Sour Cream
1 pkg (8 oz) Cream Cheese
6 TBSP Butter
2 TBSP dried minced onion
1/2-1 tsp Salt
Paprika

Note: Must use a potato masher - not a mixer... A mixer will make this recipe very runny and turn it into potato soup.

Boil peeled potatoes, mash, add sour cream, cream cheese + 4 TBSP butter. Spread in greased 9x13 pan, melt remaining butter and drizzle over potatoes. Sprinkle paprika over potatoes. Refridgerate covered or bake covered at 350 deg. for 40 minutes. Uncover and bake and additional 20 minutes. IF refridgerated, let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes prior to baking.

Then, I just had to take pictures of Josh's pies... They turned out gorgeous! V laid out all the crusts for him, and cut all of his strips.

Love the MM stocking. I just have ones that I ordered off the internet for my dogs. Even though I'm not a fan of pie, those look delicious!

I don't know that I will get on the DIS tomorrow so....

Happy Thanksgiving!

Have a wonderful time with family tomorrow. :goodvibes I will probably be packing, cleaning and hanging Christmas decorations.

:lovestruc MM's stocking is soooooooo cute! V did a great job with the M!

Josh's pies look delicious as well. Your food list sounds divine. ::yes:: I think I want to come to your house for Thanksgiving, is that okay? :confused3 I mean, you DO owe me after crashing so many of our movie nights...just saying. :tilt:

D~, I hope you and yours have a fabulous Thanksgiving!!!! :goodvibes
