Would it be quicker and feasible to walk over to the CR and catch the Monorail for the Poly from there or just join the masses and wait for either the monorail or the boat launch after the shows at the MK?

You'll be fine to catch the Resort Monorail directly at the MK itself. Going over to the Contemporary will do nothing, because you have everyone from Chef Mickey's trying to get on.
