Any recommendations on a nice hotel...not TOO expensive...in a good area of town? Thanks!

It's not Newport News but I stayed in a very decent Fairfield Inn in Hampton in August. Not a long drive to Newport News. Rate was pretty good too.

Thanks, Cruise! I'm starting a list! ;) I actually have a friend that told me to stay in Hampton. Now I'll have to consider it. After that I talked with a different friend that is a travel agent. She said...why are you going to Hampton in the Winter? I may be the only one there! LOL! Hmmmmmmmmmmm... She said...in summer, yes. Winter? No.

Well I'll be in Williamsburg in the winter so I guess maybe we will be the only two in the area :)

That Fairfield Inn is on Mercury Blvd which is right off the interstate. I have been at a few FI's that ended up not being up to what I would consider Marriott standards but this one was nice. The beds are comfortable and the room was comfortable. The continental breakfast was okay but did what I needed it to do which was give me coffee!!!!! :) Good luck!

LOL! I'm sure we won't be the ONLY ones there in winter! I mentioned it to DS's pediatrician last night. He's been there at Christmastime and said there's nothing like it! :)

Thank you for the additional info!!!! :Pinkbounc

Well nothing like it EXCEPT you know where!!!!! :)

Oh! DS's pediatrician was speaking of Williamsburg, not Hampton. LOL! I plan to take DS to Williamsburg 2 or 3 days...hopefully. I may be better off staying in Hampton. That's a little closer to Williamsburg, isn't it?

i am retired USN and have been stationed in NN at times . do yourself a favor and stay in hampton.........IMO

Lived in Newport News many moons ago. Agree with the others to stay in Hampton. Don't have any recommendations though, b/c last time we were up that way we stayed at a lovely B&B in Williamsburg.

Newport News is just a bit north (perhaps a little west) of Hampton. It's about - depending on the day and time you are driving - 20-30 from Hampton to Williamsburg. It's a nice drive and doesn't seem like it's that long. If I can be nosey and find out when you are going to be there perhaps if it's the same time we will be there we can meet up for lunch or dinner. If you are going around the holidays, if I can find the site again, I'd be glad to give you the site that my husband found with lots of things to do during the holiday season.

Thanks, Cruise! I sent you a PM. Sounds like a good idea...lunch or whatever. ;) I'll check that website also.

The only problem with staying in Hampton right now is the construction on I-64. That is the road you will take to get to Williamsburg. It is causing many many mile back-ups for the next 4 months at least. If you want to stay in Newport News, Try to stay in a hotel away from Jefferson Ave. The Omni off J. Clyde Morris is very nice and has an indoor pool. They have just finished a new Holiday Inn also on J. Clyde that is brand new. There are many nice hotels in Hampton also. You can contact the city's tourism office at http://www.newport-news.va.us Hope you have a great trip, and if you have questions, please feel free to ask and I will try to answer them.

Aaaauugghh! I already made reservations. But I'm keeping your info on file for any return trips, Geri!! THANK YOU!!!! ;)

Cruise...are you sure you were at the same hotel at the 4 people who reviewed it on Travelocity! All 4 were bad!! :( I'll be checking out Geri's suggestions.

Why not stay in Williamsburg. Great hotels, great food. It's only 30 minutes from NN. Actually NN and Hampton are so close, you can't tell where one ends and the other starts. Williamsburg has on New Year's Eve, the First Night Celebration in Colonial Williamsburg. I've gone for the last 3 or 4 years. It's great.

Sounds good, Sawyermaw. Thanks! Actually, I'm meeting friends there. :)

Yeah - I was very happy with the Fairfield. The room was clean, the beds were very comfortable, the bathroom was clean. I am VERY particular about hotel rooms and I was very happy with this one. I even exited off the wrong exit and called the hotel and they helped me get there safely and they were very happy to help me out.
