Attending conference at CSR but wanting to stay at different resort

We have stayed at CSR (Tower room) twice this year. One time was for a conference we were attending. We plan on attending this conference every year from here on out. We are a family of four: me, my husband, our 10 year old and 2 year old. Occasionally my parents may attend the conference with us who are in their late 60s but overall good health. My question is, do you all think it would be a waste of time to stay at another resort when attending a conference at CSR? Of course it would mean having to travel to CSR every day during the conference. We love CSR but would like to stay other places as well. Thoughts?

Besides the travel, the convention has likely negotiated rates for the conference. As well, there may be materials or messages delivered to the rooms that you would miss if you were not at that resort.

Not everyone who goes to a conference stays at the same hotel (for example locals). You would miss out on their negotiated rate but I would want to stay at different places as well. Disney transportation would be iffy in terms of time so I would plan on using Lyft or Uber.

I have put on a convention every year at WDW since 2004, and although we change Disney convention resorts, I always have more than one option for my attendees to choose from. This year we're at CSR, but I have AllStar resorts as another choice and another rate. Next year we're at GF, but will again offer other choices to my attendees. See if your convention folks can work the same deal with WDW as I have in the past......

Depends on the conference and how things are being arranged. If you are attending along with many others from your company, they may only pay your travel expenses if staying where they have negotiated a discount rate. Some companies will expect you to book one of the block of room they have reserved. If you are attending something not a company function, then you may have more opportunity to stay elsewhere. The exact schedule of the conference may also matter, since sometimes there can be events all day and even into the evening. If there is a long break during the day, travel back and forth to your other hotel can be inconvenient, but if you don't have a room at the conference location, where will you go for several hours between meetings/events?

I assume your parents would have their own room, so they could stay where they wanted and you could meet during your free time or in the evening. Your company likely wouldn't be paying for the travel costs of other relatives.
