Well, we bit the bullet and booked the Comfort Suites Paradise Island & flights yesterday. I have been doing some reading on the best value places for dinner.

We will be getting a breakfast included in our hotel rate and we will be bringing lots of snacks, and some lunch items as well. I also plan on bringing the Brita filter water bottles and buying the small amount of alcohol we want at the liquor store that is near or in the marina area.

But, I am having a hard time figuring out what dinners cost for the following places for 2 adults & 2 kids:

Johnny Rockets
Carmines

And, any other more "budget" restaurants anyone can suggest? I see that there is a quizonos and lots of people suggest pizza too. I have a gluten issue and Im worried about what I will be able to eat!

Any help would be appreciated! (And yes I know its expensive there, but, I also know it shouldnt be too much more than Disney- we are not doing any 5 start dining with our kids!).

Thanks!

No help with the food, but I don't think I'd use a brita pitcher and drink the water. I, personally, would only drink bottled water there.

may I ask why? This was suggested on other websites.

I went to Atlantis in 2004 and drank the water. I can't imagine why you wouldn't unless something has changed since then. It might taste bad, but probably won't make you sick (like the water in FL?)

In terms of food, my biggest tip is to leave the resort. We ate at a really inexpensive tex/Mex place just outside the resort. I think it was close enough that we walked. Ask around once you get there.

Johnny rockets will be ~25%-40% more than the states. Not outrageously more, but noticeably more.

Carmine's (and Virgils' BBQ) are family style, so it hard to price. But one entree and on app will probably serve the four of you at both places.

The pizza venue has some salads (probably chicken ceasar) and pastas.

For price neighborhood, here are the menus (with prices) at Anthony's, which is right across the street from the Comfort Suites. Prices here are the same ball park as Bimini Road and The Point.

I visit Atlantis annually and often drink tap water. We usually buy a few large bottles and then refill them with tap, cooling them in the fridge.

Here's an Atlantis budget tips discussion from the past year or so:
I received a couple requests/PMs for this advice, so I decided to start a dedicated thread on ways to vacation at Atlantis-Paradise Island Bahamas, for less. My tips:

1. Harborside timeshares....renting directly from owners, you can get a week at Atlantis for less. On places like TUG or RedWeek, you can connect directly with an owner and get a deal...or book through an agent like Family Fun at Atlantis, and have the security of a professional broker/business. Harborside units have cooking facilities so you don't have to eat out.

Atlantis access is included in a Harborside rental, so you don't have another $1,000 for park tickets once you get there. The downside of renting Harborside is you can only book in week long increments.

2. Comfort Suites-Paradise Island...usually cheaper than the traditional Atlantis towers, but same access to facilities. Plus, includes breakfast and wifi, which can be a $100+ per day savings for families.

Since its part of the Comfort Suites chains, they sometimes run specials, and nightly rates can move around.

3. Eat cheap...Atlantis is known for having expensive food. Very true, but the problem isn't so much everything's is expensive as it is that there are only a few places that are inexpensive. At dinner time, the only counter-service type place is the pizzeria...or the Quiznos. Yeah, its not glamorous to eat here, but it's decent quality taste and keeps you full.

Throw in a night at Johnny Rockets and you can feed your family for much less than the $75+ a person places that are the fine dining venues. Throw in a nicer family style meal at Carmines or Vergil's, and you can stretch one dinner into two.

4. And don't do the meal plan. Its priced such that if you go light on a single meal on your trip, it offers no savings. Both the gourmet and value plans are not priced for value but for convenience. Pay as you go, have some pizza or burgers for dinner a few nights and save.

Now if the meal plan is thrown in for free for kids, it's worth evaluating, but you still have to consider how you plan to eat. For most people, the meal plan pre-locks you into paying for much more food than you'll actually eat. Meal plan could be a value with kids for free, but still consider whether you normally eat a full-Monty buffet every breakfast and dinner of a vacation.

5. Your room pays for all the fun you really need. Unlike Disney or other theme parks, once you pay for your room, you *can be* done at Atlantis. Yes, there are excursions and dolphin experiences that cost extra....you don't have to do these to have a good time. I haven't been on an excursion in 10 years, and we've only done a dolphin experience once! And we go back annually and have enough fun that we want to go back again and again.

Plus there are lots of free activities: movie theater, trivia games, live music, touring the aquariums, and just a nice walk on the beach. Now people who need a snorkeling trip one day, jet skis the next, and a dolphin visit the next aren't going to find any place to vacation cheaply!

6. My traditional advice for people is to book airfare separately from you hotel package. This is because Atlantis and the CS have a habit of putting out significant near-term discounts. If your airfare is included in a package, you can't rebook your hotel at lower rates, but a room-only package has pretty lenient cancellation policies. You then just re-book at the new rates.

I tell people to buy airfare when they find a good price, then book a room rate they are comfortable paying. Then keep an eye out for the discounts, sometime around three months before a trip. or if you live somewhere that has reasonable airfare to Nassau, do it on short notice.

7. Subscribe to Travel Zoo newsletter (free). Occasionally, Atlantis offers discounts through codes they exclusively advertise on Travel Zoo. Pus, Travel Zoo keeps pretty good track of Atlantis' current general public discounts.

8. You a rated gambler? Atlantis will advance you comped rooms if you have an elite card from certain casinos. Hit the required play and get your room for free.

9. Go in the fall...aka hurricane season. Ocean water is warm, and the weather is nice, there's just the risk of a big storm. And rates are cheapest in September. Wife and I were actually at Atlantis once when a tropical storm (later grew to be a hurricane) passed through. Around noon, they closed own the outdoor activities and an secured loose stuff outside. Storm passed through late afternoon into the midnight hours. By 11 AM the next day, most pools were open for business and the skies were clear.

I'm happy to answer with questions.

A lot has changed in 10 years....no Tex-mex place, unless you're thinking of Anthony's. Or the Green Parrot at Hurricane Hole. I've never eaten at the GP, so I can't offer any opinion.

Otherwise you need to take a cab to Nassau for dinner. I've never done that in my 12 visits.

I had to reread your post bc I can't believe it's been 10 years since 2004. Lol. Feels like yesterday! I bet I wouldn't even recognize the area. Ha. Thanks for reminding me :-)

Atlantis has maybe tripled in size in the past 10 years. Two new hotel towers, the Aquaventure water park, a second phase of my timeshare, and the Marina Village shopping and dining area (that was just a grassy knoll 10 years ago).

And once its new competition on Cable Bach opens (Bahamar, a new Las Vegas sized hotel/casino development), it will probably do another expansion.

wow, wealth of info. Thank you!

I had read your Atlantis budget tips before booking, so thank you again for that! Just trying to make a list of possible places to eat. Are reservations recommended?

Thanks again!

I guess I treat it like Mexico. If others say its safe, I guess it is. I just am not willing to chance it to save a few dollars.

Not to start an off topic debate, but technically bottled water isnt so safe either ;)

In any event, the water on paradise island is from a desalinization plant (I looked it up after you posted this). We have been to other island (aka Aruba) that relies on this, and never had an issue. Other places, I certainly would agree with your advice though!

Are reservations recommended?
Yes, for Carmines and Virgil's, though you might be able to walk-in to Virgil's. Most of the casual places don't take reservations. Which is to say if they take reservations, you need one - and if they don't take reservations you can't get one.

I think they start taking dining reservations 60 days out. We made a mistake this year and didn't call soon enough and weren't able to get reservations for Mesa Grill (when I tried ~3 weeks out). When I got there they were still booked 100%, but my wife and SIL were able to eat first-come, first-serve at bar area tables at both Mesa Grill and Nobu (we were there the week before Easter this year, and I think that you can usually get next day non-prime time reservations in slower times of the year).

thank you again for the info. All dining reservations are via phone? I wish there was a disboards for the Atlantis! I have been on the trip advisor forums and they are a bit lacking, imo!

Phone only if you are staying at the Comfort Suites or Harborside. There might be a system on the web for Atlantis tower guests, but atlantis.com doesn't ever recognize my timeshare (Harborside) reservation, so I have to call. And calling is better than email, because I've found the concierges you can email are unreliable.

I have been on the trip advisor forums and they are a bit lacking, imo!
There's waves of activity on the TA board. I'm on there frequently and there's a few other people who are quite helpful. There are some on there (Nassau locals I believe) who hate Atlantis and always steer you away. Ignore what they have to say about Atlantis, but the stuff they say about non-Atlantis dining venues should be reliable.

OP - Glad you started this thread. Thinking of going here next summer. Southwest is starting to fly to Nassau and between DH and I we have 165,000 points so flights would be free.

My boss owns a timeshare in St. Thomas (Interval) that he never uses and says we can use whenever we want just pay the trading fee. So, we would stay at Harborside. Do you think we would be able to get a room here doing that in the summer? How far in advance can you book a timeshare room. If this all worked out it would be a pretty cheap trip - mainly food, which we would do a lot of meals in the room.

I don't think you'll be able to swap for a unit in the summer. Late summer once schools have started, possibly. Harborside is very popular in the summer and if owners don't use their units, other Starwood owners get first priority in Starwood's own trading system and in Interval. Pus Harborside units rent well, so very few Harborside units get deposited into Interval. I'd never deposit mine....I'd sooner rent it for cash and book something else using the rental income.

The Starwood Timeshare Users Group message boards will provide the best advice. You should have specifics, so people can give an accurate answer as to the likelihood of making that trade.

ETA: just saw your post at TUG...

Can not help on prices But I do remember two things (5 years ago) food at Atlantis was very expensive. Subway 5 foot long promotion in Nassua (NOT Atlantis) it was a 7 foot long --just change the amount in the song :rotfl:

That's beyond ridiculous. The Bahamas is a first world country - on of the wealthiest and most developed in the Americas. You don't even need a Brita, drink the tap water, it's fine.

I suggest you to search the recipe and ingredient of Atlantis food online, or you can even order this on any online store it will help you to find the actual and reasonable price of the Atlantis food.
