At what age would you let your child get a tattoo?

When they are out on their own...paying their own way in life and paying for their own tattoo....not a day before.

No tattoos here until you're old enough to not need permission and can pay for it yourself. Even then I won't be thrilled.

::yes:: ITA!! ::yes::

Unfortunately, my son's father has a lot of tattoos. He keeps "joking" that he's taking him for his first tattoo "next week" or he'll say "don't forget the appt at the tattoo parlor" when I'm picking our son up. :sad2: The jerk. I just keep telling my DS that he can get one when he doesn't need me to sign for permission to get it. Oh, and I also tell the ex that he's paying to have it removed if DS comes home with a tat before then!

LONG thread---sorry if this was already posted and I missed it---but in my state, it's not legal until you're 18. Thank goodness, or I'd have had one...and I am SO GLAD I don't.

not until they are out of my house. And you really have to think, what looks good toady on firm skin and muscles is going to look like crap 50 years from know. I just don't get it. Don't get my wrong, I watch LA Ink, I think they are extremely talented at their craft, I just personally don't like them, I think they look dirty.

I still think it is horrible to judge anyone based on appearance. It doesn't matter if you agree with what they are doing or would choose that for yourself. I don't think we have the right to judge others based on thier appearence. Sorry, but it is the same thing as judging based on the color of ones skin, or someone's weight, and it is wrong.

Right or wrong, it's human nature. We all do it, all the time. We judge people, situations, events in a split second. It's how our minds work. We can try to be open minded and give people the benefit of the doubt but the reality is that the old adage "you never get a second chance to make a first impression" is absolutely true.

Having said that, there is a huge difference between judging somebody for their appearance...tattoos, piercings, hair and clothing styles...and judging somebody based on the colour of their skin. You choose how to wear your hair, which clothes to buy, whether or not to have visible tattoos and facial piercings, and you have to acknowledge that you will be judged for those choices. Nobody, (with the notable exception of Michael Jackson ;) ) can control the colour of their skin!

I will never give my kids permission to get tattoos or facial piercings. Hairstyles in this house will be in line with my idea of "normal". My husband used to tease me and say he wanted to get a tattoo and I always responded with "Make sure you get one that your next wife will like".
